Rain and snow that has lingered across much of Labrador this week is finally beginning to move out tonight, and as that system pulls away, it will drag some unsettled weather southward across parts of Newfoundland overnight into Saturday morning.

That said, this is not shaping up to be a washout weekend at all. In fact, once we get through the first half of Saturday, conditions improve quickly for much of the Province with sunshine returning and a much more pleasant finish to the weekend on the way.

Through tonight, rain and snow in Labrador will taper off from north to south, while areas of western and central Newfoundland see some light rain or snow move in toward Saturday morning. Northeastern Newfoundland, the Bonavista Peninsula, and even parts of the Avalon could wake up to a few showers or flurries early in the day Saturday, but this won’t last very long.

By Saturday afternoon, most areas will see improving conditions with breaks of sunshine developing and just a few lingering showers left behind. Snowfall amounts are expected to remain fairly minor. Labrador may see just a few additional centimetres in the highest terrain, while western Newfoundland’s higher elevations in the Long Range Mountains could pick up 5 to 10 cm. Outside of that, little additional accumulation is expected.

Saturday will still feel cool across the Province with temperatures generally in the single digits to low teens and a breezy northwest wind in many areas. However, the weather story improves significantly by Sunday. Sunshine is expected to dominate across much of Newfoundland and Labrador with highs climbing into the teens in many communities and even near 20 degrees in parts of western Labrador, Churchill Falls, and Goose Bay.

Looking ahead into next week, temperatures remain fairly seasonable but not especially warm. While we’ll see some mild afternoons here and there, there is still no sign of sustained early summer warmth arriving anytime soon. Periods of showers are also expected to return to parts of western Labrador by Monday and continue through at least Thursday.

The next forecast update will be posted bright and early Thursday morning!
