A large and slow-moving weather system is drenching southern Newfoundland and bringing a mix of snow, rain, and freezing rain to Labrador.
Atmospheric Setup
Satellite and radar imagery show a broad trough dominating eastern North America, with moisture streaming northward from the Caribbean. This setup is creating an “atmospheric river” — a continuous plume of moisture pointed squarely at southern Newfoundland.
Temperatures are rising across the island as the system pulls in warmer air, while cold air remains entrenched across Labrador.
Newfoundland: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
Rain has already begun across parts of southern Newfoundland and will continue through Wednesday morning. Along the south coast — from Port aux Basques to the Avalon — rainfall totals are expected to exceed 100 millimetres in some areas. Rainfall warnings are in effect across much of the southern half of the island.
Forecast models show particularly high amounts in the Harbour Breton and Bay d’Espoir regions, with widespread totals of 50–100 mm elsewhere along the coast. Inland and northern areas will see lower totals, but it will remain a damp, breezy couple of days.
As the low deepens late Tuesday into Wednesday, strong southeasterly winds will develop across the island. Gusts between 80 and 100 km/h are likely across the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas, while exposed areas along the west coast could see gusts topping 100 km/h, especially in typical wind-prone locations like Trout River and Lark Harbour.
By Wednesday afternoon, colder air will filter in behind the departing system, allowing rain to change to flurries or snow squalls across parts of western Newfoundland.
Labrador: Two Rounds of Snow
In Labrador, conditions vary dramatically by region. Western areas such as Labrador City and Wabush are expecting up to 40 cm of snow through Wednesday, while Churchill Falls could approach that mark by the end of the storm.
Further east, areas near Goose Bay will start with snow that transitions to rain before switching back to snow Wednesday as colder air returns. Freezing rain is expected for Eagle River and surrounding areas early Tuesday, with warnings already in effect.
The heaviest snow in Labrador is expected Wednesday as a secondary low forms and tracks northeastward.
Looking Ahead
By Wednesday evening, much of Newfoundland will begin to dry out, though it will stay breezy. Another low is set to arrive Thursday, bringing additional rain to eastern Newfoundland and a mix of rain and snow to Labrador.
It’s shaping up to be a very active week of November weather — heavy rain for the island, accumulating snow for Labrador, and plenty of wind in between.
