A Beautiful Thanksgiving, But Change Is Coming

It’s been one of those rare October days where the Island looks almost cloud-free from space — and that’s exactly what it was today. A broad area of high pressure is parked over Newfoundland, Labrador, and much of Atlantic Canada, keeping skies clear and conditions generally calm on this Thanksgiving Monday.

That same high will stick around into tomorrow — which also happens to be Election Day. If you’ve got plans to head out and vote, the weather couldn’t cooperate much better. Expect a cool, quiet night tonight with lows near 0 °C to 7 °C, and a very pleasant day Tuesday with highs between 10 °C and 17 °C, depending on where you are.

A Turn Toward Cooler and Wetter Days

After tomorrow, the pattern changes. The high that’s been keeping things settled will drift away as a couple of low-pressure systems become “blocked up” in the North Atlantic. Winds will shift to the north by Wednesday, ushering in cooler air, and with it, the return of the RDF — rain, drizzle, and fog — for the first time in quite a while.

By mid to late week, showers will start to move in, beginning late Wednesday and continuing through Thursday and Friday. Rain chances ramp up further into the weekend, particularly for eastern Newfoundland, where periods of rain and fog could linger into next week.

Region by Region

  • South Coast/West(ish) Coast: Often the winner in setups like this — expect the mildest, driest conditions overall. Highs near the low teens with just a few showers possible.

  • Central & Avalon: Increasing RDF later this week and into the weekend. Temperatures will trend cooler after Tuesday’s mild weather.

  • Labrador: Daytime highs near 5 °C to 10 °C for the next several days, with mostly cloudy skies and some light rain or drizzle at times, especially in the east.

A Few Final Notes

If you’re hoping for rain to help with the recent dryness, there’s at least some on the way — though not a major soaker just yet. And while the tropics are still active with Tropical Storm Lorenzo curving toward the Azores, it won’t have any impact here in Atlantic Canada.

So enjoy the sunshine while it lasts — tomorrow may be the last truly mild day of the season. And if you haven’t already, download the Sheerr Weather App for the latest forecasts, live webcams, and updates as this next pattern sets up.

Happy Thanksgiving, and have a great Monday evening!
