After a beautiful afternoon across much of Newfoundland, the weather is set to turn wetter as we head into Friday and the weekend.
A developing area of low pressure will spread rain into southwestern Newfoundland overnight before pushing east and north through the day Friday. While much of eastern Newfoundland will start the day dry, rain will gradually work eastward and should arrive on the Avalon during the afternoon.
If you're planning to get outside on the Avalon Friday, the morning looks like the better half of the day. Expect a mix of sun and cloud early before clouds thicken and rain moves in later in the afternoon.
Elsewhere, southern, western, central, and northwestern Newfoundland can expect a much wetter day, with rain arriving earlier and lingering longer.
Wreckhouse Wind Warning
The Wreckhouse area will also be dealing with strong winds Friday. A Yellow Level Wreckhouse Wind Warning is in effect, with gusts potentially reaching 100 km/h from Friday morning through Friday afternoon.
Travelers along the Trans-Canada Highway near Channel-Port aux Basques should be prepared for difficult driving conditions, particularly for high-sided vehicles.
Rain Continues Into Saturday
The rain doesn't simply move through and leave. The low responsible for Friday's weather will linger nearby, keeping showers and periods of rain across much of the Island into Saturday.
Some areas of central and western Newfoundland could see rainfall totals exceeding 25 mm by Saturday evening. Most eastern areas, including the Avalon, will generally see lower amounts in the 5 to 15 mm range.
There is also the potential for a few thunderstorms on Saturday, particularly across central and western sections of the Island.
A Warm Saturday for Parts of Eastern Newfoundland?
Saturday may end up being warmer than forecast across eastern Newfoundland.
Current forecasts call for highs near 17°C in the St. John's area, but a southwest wind setup often leads to warmer temperatures than models anticipate. If enough sunshine develops between the showers, temperatures could climb into the low 20s across parts of the Avalon and eastern Newfoundland.
It's something I'll be watching closely over the next 24 hours.
Looking Ahead
Sunday looks cooler as winds shift direction, but temperatures should gradually trend upward next week.
While we're not looking at sustained summer warmth just yet, temperatures in the mid to upper teens appear increasingly likely by the second half of next week.
The weather pattern also remains somewhat unsettled, and another system around the middle of next week could bring a period of rain and wind to parts of the Province.
For Labrador, rainfall with this system looks limited. Temperatures will remain coolest along the coast while western Labrador continues to see some of the warmest readings in the Province, with highs near 20°C expected Friday.
Have a great evening, and I'll have your next forecast update Friday morning.
