The last of today's rain is slowly pulling northward this evening as the system responsible for the unsettled weather lifts away. By midnight, most of Newfoundland will be dry, with lingering rain mainly confined to the Northern Peninsula and coastal Labrador. Areas of fog will remain an issue overnight, particularly along east and northeast-facing coastlines.
Thursday is shaping up to be the pick of the next several days. While much of the Province will start the day under cloudy skies, sunshine will gradually break through from west to east as the day progresses. By late afternoon and evening, most of Newfoundland should be enjoying at least some sunshine, with the exception of the Northern Peninsula and parts of coastal Labrador, where clouds are likely to linger. High temperatures will reach the mid to upper teens for most areas, with some inland locations in Central and Western Newfoundland approaching 20°C.
Unfortunately, the break won't last long.
A new low-pressure system currently tracking through the Great Lakes will push into Atlantic Canada Thursday night and begin spreading rain into Newfoundland early Friday morning. Rain will advance from southwest to northeast through the day, accompanied by increasing winds and cooler temperatures.
The bigger concern is that this system looks set to stall near the region through the weekend. That means periods of rain, showers, and generally unsettled weather are likely from Friday through at least Sunday. While eastern areas may see some milder temperatures and even a few breaks of sunshine at times, much of the Province can expect a damp and changeable weekend.
Saturday may offer some brief warmth across eastern Newfoundland, where temperatures could climb close to 20°C in a few locations. However, the overall theme for the weekend remains one of clouds, showers, and periods of rain.
Looking beyond the weekend, there are at least some encouraging signs. Forecast guidance suggests a gradual shift toward warmer, more summer-like conditions later next week. While it's far too early to promise sustained warmth, there are growing indications that the persistent cool and unsettled pattern may finally begin to loosen its grip.
If you've been waiting for summer to arrive, there may finally be some reason for optimism.
