If you stepped outside today, it probably felt a lot more like June than it has for much of the spring.
Much of Newfoundland and Labrador enjoyed another quiet, warm day with a mix of sunshine and a few passing clouds. Temperatures climbed well into the teens across most of the Island, while parts of western Labrador pushed into the mid-20s. It was the kind of day that reminds you summer isn't far away — even if it hasn't fully settled in yet.
Tonight will be a comfortable one across most of the province, with light winds and temperatures staying a few degrees above freezing. There may be a spotty shower along parts of the South Coast and Southwest Coast, but for most areas, the weather remains fairly uneventful.
Wednesday starts off looking pretty decent as well. There will be a few scattered showers around, particularly across western Labrador and parts of Newfoundland, but many areas will still see some sunshine. The bigger story will be the arrival of a cold front.
As the front moves through during the day, winds will shift from the west to the north and northeast, eventually becoming easterly across eastern Newfoundland. That wind change will bring noticeably cooler air.
For eastern Newfoundland, temperatures will likely peak around midday before falling through the afternoon. Places that start the day feeling quite pleasant could find themselves back near single digits by evening as cooler marine air pushes inland. Similar conditions are expected across central Newfoundland, where temperatures in the mid to upper teens during the day will gradually slip downward once the wind shifts.
Western Newfoundland will hold onto the warmer air a little longer, with temperatures remaining in the teens through much of the afternoon and evening.
The next weather maker arrives Thursday.
An area of low pressure will track across the region, bringing rain to much of Newfoundland. Once that system moves through, it looks like cooler and somewhat breezy weather settles in for Friday and possibly into Saturday.
Looking beyond that, there are still few strong signals suggesting a major warm-up is on the way. In fact, much of the longer-range guidance continues to hint at temperatures running near or below seasonal averages through much of next week. While there will certainly be some decent days mixed in, sustained summer-like warmth remains difficult to find.
So after a couple of pleasant days, keep the jacket handy. It looks like Newfoundland and Labrador will be returning to a more familiar June pattern of cooler temperatures, clouds, and occasional rain as we head toward the weekend
