Snow Arrives Late Tonight for Eastern Newfoundland — Burst of Heavy Rates Possible

Snow is set to return to eastern Newfoundland late tonight, with the Avalon Peninsula — including the St. John’s metro — seeing flakes arrive overnight into early Friday morning. While this isn’t shaping up to be a major storm, it’s the kind of system that can still cause morning disruptions, especially during the heaviest burst of snow.

⏱️ Timing

  • Late Evening → Midnight: Snow pushes into the southern Avalon and South Shore

  • Overnight → Early Morning: Snow expands across the Avalon

  • Peak Impact: ~3 AM to 9 AM

  • By Midday Friday: Snow tapers off and ends

❄️ Snowfall Rates

For a few hours early Friday morning, snowfall rates may briefly become intense:

  • Peak rates: 2–3 cm per hour

  • Typical rates: 1–2 cm per hour

That heavier window lines up almost perfectly with the morning commute, so even though this isn’t a blockbuster system, travel conditions could deteriorate quickly for a time.

📊 Expected Snowfall

  • Avalon / St. John’s Metro: 7–15 cm

  • Higher amounts: Southern Shore & SE Avalon

  • Lower amounts: West of Trinity & Placentia Bays

There is some guidance suggesting totals could push closer to 20 cm, but right now that’s the less likely scenario — something to watch, not the forecast.

🧠 Why Totals Might Overperform

This snow will likely be on the fluffier side, meaning:

  • Lower density

  • Higher accumulation potential

  • Rates may look modest… but stack up faster than expected

That’s why a system with “only” 1–2 cm/hr rates can still deliver a solid snowfall.

🌡️ Temperatures

  • Eastern NL Friday: -1°C to -3°C

  • Cold enough for efficient accumulation

  • Little impact elsewhere across NL & Labrador

⚠️ What to Expect

  • Slippery roads for the morning commute

  • Reduced visibility during heavier bursts

  • Quick accumulation before sunrise

Again — not a major storm — but poor timing + brief heavy rates = travel headaches.

👀 Looking Ahead

  • Weekend: Another system brings snow to western NL & SE Labrador (10–20 cm possible)

  • Early Next Week: Watching a potential low bringing rain (east) and snow (central/west)

And despite the arrival of spring…

…it’s not going to feel like it.
