Friday Morning’s Weather Briefing — March 20, 2026
Good Friday morning! Here are today’s weather highlights:
Spring officially arrives TODAY with the Vernal (Spring) Equinox at 12:16 PM NDT (11:46 ADT)!
Snow will fly over the Avalon early this morning, before ending from west to east by about 10 AM. Totals for the Metro and Southern Shore will be in the 5 to 10 cm range, with locally higher amounts. Lesser amounts will fall to the west.
There will be some flurries and/or pockets of light snow over parts of Central today and in Labrador West.
Highs reach the minus single digits to near freezing over much of the Island today, and will be closer to -10º in Labrador (or less)
The next system arrives later Saturday and will bring snow to much of southwest and western Newfoundland, and southeast Labrador, through Sunday morning. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the Channel-Port aux Basques area as of this morning.
Today’s Forecast
The snow on the Avalon will end between 9 and 10 AM, after 5 to 10 cm of snow. Travel conditions around the area will improve thereafter as temperatures moderate to near freezing and the high March sun angle does its thing. Outside the Avalon, the weather across most of NL looks fairly quiet today. There will be a few scattered flurries in Central and a few more pockets of light snow over Labrador West. Highs reach near -10ºC in Labrador and the minus single digits to near 0ºC over the Island portion of the Province.

The season of SPRING officially arrives today at 12:16 PM NDT (11:46 AM ADT) with the vernal (spring) equinox. From here on, our days will continue to get longer until the summer solstice (the day of the year with the most daylight), which will occur on June 21.
Spring arrives today at 12:16 PM NDT (11:46 AM ADT)
That being said, someone may have forgotten to tell Old Man Winter. . . The next weathermaker rolls in tomorrow, bringing snow to parts of southwest and western Newfoundland, along with the GNP and southeastern Labrador, through Sunday. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the Channel-Port aux Basques area for 15 to 25+ cm of snow and wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h from the northwest. I expect alerts for the area will be extended based on the snowfall forecast between Saturday and Sunday.
