It’s been an unsettled Thursday across Newfoundland and Labrador, with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms rolling through. A cold front has been sliding south, bringing cooler air into northern and central parts of the island. Temperatures dropped into the low-to-mid teens north of the front this afternoon, while southern areas stayed in the high teens and even low 20s.
Regional State of Emergency Changes for Bay de Verde Peninsula
On Thursday, August 28, Justice and Public Safety Minister Dr. John Haggie confirmed that the regional state of emergency from Bristol’s Hope to Whiteway — which included the entire Carbonear–Trinity–Bay de Verde district — has now been partially lifted. Read more about that here.
Tonight & Friday
Showers and thunderstorms will continue into the evening in spots, but will fade out by 9–10 p.m. Skies will clear overnight as cooler air settles in. Many will wake up to lows in the single digits or low teens Friday morning.
Friday itself looks much quieter. Sunshine and clouds will mix for most of the province, with highs in the mid-to-upper teens for central and western Newfoundland, and around 20°C or so for eastern and southern areas. Labrador will be calm with seasonal temperatures.
One interesting side note: history will be made Friday morning in St. Lawrence, where Nord Space is scheduled to attempt Canada’s first commercial rocket launch. Weather looks cooperative for that event with sun and cloud and highs near 22°C.
Saturday: Soaking Rain for the East & South
Unfortunately, the quiet weather won’t last. A developing low will track in from the southeast Saturday morning and spread a steady, at times heavy, rain into southern Newfoundland before daybreak (as it stands now).
South Coast, Burin & Avalon Peninsulas: Up to 30 mm of rain is forecast, especially from Clarenville eastward and across the Burin and Avalon.
Central & Northeast Newfoundland: 10–15 mm possible.
West Coast & Northern Peninsula: Lighter amounts, under 5 mm.
The rain will taper from south to north later in the day, but Saturday overall looks damp and unsettled for much of the island.
Holiday Weekend Outlook
The payoff comes Sunday and Monday. Both days look much brighter and warmer, with plenty of sunshine for most of Newfoundland and Labrador. After Saturday’s soaker, the long weekend will finish on a high note.
