Regional State of Emergency Partially Lifted for Bay de Verde Peninsula

The provincial government has announced changes to the Regional State of Emergency on the Bay de Verde Peninsula, and for many residents, it’s welcome news.

What’s Changed

On Thursday, August 28, Justice and Public Safety Minister Dr. John Haggie confirmed that the regional state of emergency from Bristol’s Hope to Whiteway — which included the entire Carbonear–Trinity–Bay de Verde district — has now been partially lifted.

That means most communities in the affected area are no longer under the emergency order. However, there are still some exceptions.

Where the State of Emergency and Evacuation Orders Remain

Three communities continue to face stricter measures:

  • The unincorporated area of Western Bay

  • The unincorporated area of Ochre Pit Cove

  • Northern Bay (south of the Northern Bay Brook Bridge)

These locations remain under both the state of emergency and evacuation orders for the time being.

Communities Still Under Alert

Other communities are not under full evacuation but remain on evacuation alert, meaning residents should be ready to act if conditions change:

  • Kingston

  • Town of Small Point–Broad Cove–Blackhead–Adam’s Cove

Evacuation Alerts Lifted

Meanwhile, several areas have been cleared and residents there can breathe a little easier. Effective immediately, the precautionary evacuation alerts for the following communities have been lifted:

  • Perry’s Cove

  • Salmon Cove

  • Victoria

  • Burnt Point

  • Gull Island
