Showers And Flurries Return Tuesday Afternoon
Tonight & Tuesday: Cooler Temperatures and Some Light Snow/Wintry Mix
We’re not talking snow tonight, but temperatures will dip near or below freezing almost everywhere. Tonight is quiet, cold, and mostly clear.
By Tuesday afternoon, a small system moves into western and central Newfoundland, bringing rain or wet snow, depending on elevation and location. Inland and higher terrain will see the greatest chance of wintry conditions. This isn’t a big snowfall event — generally just a couple of centimetres in the west — but roads could briefly turn slick in spots.
Labrador sees some flurries in the west late tonight, but otherwise remains cold and quiet heading into Tuesday. High temperatures peak near or slightly above freezing on the Island and near or slightly below freezing in Labrador.
Wednesday: A Pretty Decent Day
Wednesday looks surprisingly pleasant: sunshine across Labrador and a mix of sun and cloud across most of Newfoundland. Highs range from 0°C to 6°C, on the Island and 0º to -6º in Labrador. A calm day before the next system arrives late in the day or evening.
Thursday Into Friday: Another Split System — Rain for NL, Snow for Labrador
To understand Thursday’s weather, we have to zoom out. Two pieces of atmospheric energy — one near Montana and one closer to the southern U.S. — will begin to phase. As they combine and strengthen, a large system pushes rain into Ontario and Quebec before spreading east into the Maritimes and eventually Newfoundland.
For Newfoundland, precipitation early Thursday may begin as brief light snow, but it quickly transitions to rain as milder air surges in. Highs jump to 8–10°C on Thursday and Friday, keeping most of the island firmly on the warm side.
In Labrador, it’s a different story entirely. Significant snow is possible Thursday into Friday in the west, with a messy mix along parts of the coast and mostly snow on the North Coast by Friday.
Long Range: A Colder Pattern Locked In for Early December
Once this warm push moves through, temperatures start trending downward across the board. Western Labrador drops into the minus teens by the weekend. Goose Bay and the southern coast follow suit early next week. Newfoundland cools more gradually, but northern areas — including the Northern Peninsula — may fall below freezing by Sunday and Monday, with snow returning to the forecast.
Why the cooldown? The polar vortex becomes displaced, allowing Arctic air to spill southward into Canada and the U.S. As that colder air slides eastward, it sets the stage for a more wintry pattern across Atlantic Canada through the first week of December.
I’ll have my next update posted over the weekend.
