An area of low pressure moving into the region tonight will keep much of Newfoundland and parts of Labrador damp and foggy through the overnight hours. While that sounds like a recipe for a miserable Saturday, the reality is a little more complicated.
In fact, Saturday is shaping up to be a tale of two forecasts depending on where you live.
For western Newfoundland, the Northern Peninsula, southern Labrador and parts of the South Coast, it will be a wet day. Rain will be on and off through much of Saturday, with rainfall amounts generally in the 10 to 25 mm range. Some locations on the Northern Peninsula, southeastern Labrador and the higher terrain near the Burgeo Highway could see more than 25 mm before things begin improving late Saturday night.
Eastern Newfoundland is a different story.
As winds turn southerly and southwesterly across the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas, that offshore flow should help temperatures climb much higher than we've seen recently. If sunny breaks develop as expected during the afternoon, many communities on the Avalon could push close to, or even above, 20°C. Humidity levels will also be noticeably higher, making it feel more summer-like than it has in quite some time.
The trade-off is the potential for afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
As the low approaches and begins transferring energy to a secondary low Saturday afternoon, instability will increase across parts of the Island. The greatest risk for thunderstorms appears to be across central, northeastern and interior Newfoundland, although a storm can't be ruled out on the Avalon later in the day. Any storms that develop could bring brief heavy downpours, gusty winds and frequent lightning.
If thunder roars, head indoors.
By Sunday, the weather improves for many areas as the low pulls away. While the second half of the weekend won't be perfect, it should be noticeably better than Saturday for much of Newfoundland. Temperatures will be a bit cooler than Saturday's highs, but many areas should see a mix of sun and cloud with only isolated showers.
Looking ahead to next week, there are signs that summer may finally be trying to settle in.
Monday and Tuesday look quite pleasant across much of Newfoundland, with temperatures reaching the upper teens and lower 20s in many communities. Central Newfoundland could see highs near 21°C, while parts of western Newfoundland approach 20°C.
The next weather-maker arrives Wednesday. Current guidance suggests a fairly potent low-pressure system will bring another round of rain and wind to parts of the province. While it's far too early to talk about impacts in detail, it will be something worth watching closely over the next few days.
Meanwhile, Labrador is looking increasingly summer-like. Temperatures in Lab West and Churchill Falls should climb into the lower 20s early next week, while Goose Bay may flirt with the mid-20s on Monday before cooling slightly through midweek.
After a cool and unsettled start to June, the weather pattern finally appears to be taking some tentative steps toward summer.
