Muggy Weather Breaks as More Comfortable Air Moves Across Newfoundland

The exceptionally muggy weather is finally beginning to break across parts of Newfoundland, but eastern areas will have to wait a little longer for relief. As of 4 p.m. Friday, it remained very humid in the east, with a humidex of 32. A cold front slowly moving across the Island will push that humid air offshore overnight, replacing it with cooler and much more comfortable conditions for the weekend.
Before that happens, however, the front will produce areas of rain across eastern Newfoundland. Some intense showers were showing up Friday afternoon between Gander and Eastport, while rain was becoming more widespread farther east. Rain will reach the Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas by around midnight and could be briefly heavy in some areas. Most of it should move offshore by approximately 6 a.m. Saturday, although a few showers may linger a little longer over the eastern Avalon.
Once the rain clears, Saturday will improve quickly. Sunshine will become widespread across most of Newfoundland by midday, while Labrador will also enjoy a mainly quiet and sunny day. A few showers are possible near Nain, the Torngats and later around Labrador West, but most areas will remain dry.
A more refreshing night
One of the most noticeable changes will be felt overnight.During the recent stretch of humid weather, temperatures struggled to fall below 15°C to 18°C in many places. Friday night will be much more refreshing, with lows near 11°C in Grand Falls-Windsor, 8°C in Buchans and 9°C in Churchill Falls and Labrador City. It will be a great opportunity to open the windows and cool down the house—particularly away from the Avalon Peninsula.
Still warm, but much less muggy
The arrival of cooler and drier air does not mean the heat is disappearing everywhere.Temperatures across central Newfoundland will climb into the middle and upper 20s Saturday, but the lower humidity will make it feel considerably more comfortable.
St. John’s will begin Saturday with clouds and a few lingering showers, but conditions should steadily improve during the late morning. Skies will become increasingly sunny through the afternoon, with a temperature near 20°C and a beautiful evening expected.
That is especially good news for anyone heading to the Churchill Park Music Festival. Friday evening may be a little damp, but Saturday’s weather should be excellent. Labrador will also see another warm Saturday, with temperatures reaching the middle to upper 20s inland and slightly cooler readings along the coast.
Sunday will bring even more heat to some areas. Grand Falls-Windsor could reach 29°C, while Gander climbs to 28°C and Clarenville reaches 27°C. Happy Valley-Goose Bay is forecast to hit approximately 31°C.
A cooler and more unsettled week ahead
The heat will not last everywhere.Several areas of low pressure are expected to pass near or over Newfoundland and Labrador next week, bringing repeated opportunities for showers and periods of rain. The pattern will also encourage more easterly and northeasterly winds, leading to cooler conditions across much of Newfoundland.
Eastern and central areas should fall back to highs near 18°C by Monday, with similar temperatures continuing through much of the week. Western Newfoundland will be less affected by the onshore flow and should remain somewhat warmer.
The cooldown will arrive later across the Northern Peninsula and Labrador. Labrador West should return to the upper teens and lower 20s after a hot weekend, while Happy Valley-Goose Bay may remain quite warm through Tuesday before temperatures gradually ease later in the week.
