Eastern Newfoundland finally picked up some much-needed rainfall today — and it could not have come at a better time. Residents of Conception Bay North remain anxious to get home as the Kingston wildfire continues to burn. While the fire is still active on its western flank, rainfall around Carbonear, Heart’s Desire, and Victoria reached close to 30 mm today, providing a major boost to firefighting efforts.
A rainfall warning remains in effect for Postville and Makkovik in Labrador, where up to 50 mm is expected by tonight. Meanwhile, Happy Valley–Goose Bay has already seen nearly 60 mm since Sunday.
Across Newfoundland, showers are easing with clearing skies pushing in from the south and southwest coast. Fog in southern areas will drift offshore overnight as drier air arrives. Temperatures were very muggy this afternoon, reaching 22°C in St. John’s, Gander, and Bonavista, but humidex values pushed close to 30°C in some communities. Relief is on the way, as westerly winds tonight will bring a cooler, more comfortable air mass.
Wednesday’s Outlook
Newfoundland: Mainly dry, with a few scattered Avalon showers in the morning. Afternoon highs in the teens and 20s. Breezy at times with southwest winds.
Labrador: Seasonable, with highs in the teens after overnight lows near 10°C.
Tomorrow Night/Thursday: A weak system brings 5–10 mm of rain to the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsula before moving offshore.
Looking Ahead
The rest of the week and long weekend remain steady with teens and 20s across the province. The pattern looks quiet for Labor Day, but we’ll keep a close eye on it — because in Newfoundland and Labrador, things can change quickly.
