Here are today’s highlights:
Rain, or rain mixed with wet snow, is currently falling over the Avalon and that will continue through the day.
Forecasts indicate the best chance of seeing snow will be later this morning and this afternoon (on the Avalon).
The Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas have light rain, drizzle and fog in the forecast today.
Quiet and cloudy conditions rule much of Newfoundland and coastal Labrador today.
Inland areas of the Island and interior parts of Labrador see the sunshine.
Weather improves after today… big time!
NEWFOUNDLAND’S FORECAST
June 1, and meteorological summer is officially here — though you'd never know it on the Avalon. Temperatures are near or just above freezing, winds are moderate, and it feels like it’s below the goose egg. On top of that, we are looking at a forecast with rain AND SNOW today for the easternmost Peninsula. Farther west, we are looking at light rain and showers for the Burin to Bonavista Peninsula corridor, including Clarneville and the surrounding area. To the west, it’s generally cloudy for the central and northeast coasts and the Northern Peninsula today. The West Coast, Southwest, and South Coast will see generally sunny skies today.
Newfoundland's forecast for today - June 1, 2026.
An area of low pressure will pass east of the Island today, which will keep the bulk of the moisture on and near the Avalon. I say moisture because what falls will not just be rain. The air aloft is just cold enough that some of what falls will fall as snow. Especially inland, over higher terrain, and during heavier bursts of precipitation. During the first half of the day, it looks like there will be more of a rain/snow mix. The best chance of seeing snow will be from late morning into the afternoon as the low begins to depart and some colder air wraps in around it. Futurecast shows this well. That animation is below.
Snowfall amounts will not be significant… but they are notable considering it’s the beginning of June. While many spots will see at least a trace (meaning you see some flakes falling), some areas of the northeast Avalon will pick up a couple of centimetres on the grassy and unpaved surfaces. I don’t foresee roads becoming slick, as this time of year, it would take some pretty intense snowfall to do that. It’s not impossible… but not on the likely end of the scale.
Expected snowfall today (June 1, 2026). Most of the accumluation will be inland and over higher terrain.
After today, the weather will improve. A little for tomorrow and more significant as we move into later stages of the week! Highs reach the upper single digits to teens Tuesday and dare I say ever warmer (Island-wide) by Wednesday.
LABRADOR’S FORECAST
Over in the Big Land, it's a reasonably quiet start to June with mostly cloudy skies — the low is clearly not the story in Labrador today. Highs will climb toward 10°C across much of the interior and coast. Not exactly warm, but dry and manageable. Conditions across the Big Land remain generally decent today and for the next few days. Always nice when these little blocks can be kept short!
