After a cold, windy, and at times snowy start to June across parts of the Avalon, we're finally saying goodbye to the low pressure system that brought today's unsettled weather. As that system pulls away, conditions across Newfoundland and Labrador are set to improve significantly over the next couple of days.
Tuesday is shaping up to be a pretty decent day across most of the province. For those of us in eastern Newfoundland, it won't take much to make the weather feel better than what we've been dealing with lately. Expect a mix of sun and cloud with generally dry conditions. A few isolated afternoon showers may pop up along parts of the West Coast, but most areas will stay dry. Temperatures will be seasonable, with inland communities enjoying the mildest conditions while coastal areas remain a little cooler thanks to onshore winds.
Labrador will also see a pleasant day Tuesday, with highs ranging from the upper single digits to the mid-teens under partly to mostly cloudy skies. The warming trend continues into Wednesday, which is looking like the pick of the week for many areas. Much of Newfoundland should climb into the mid to upper teens, while parts of Labrador could approach the 20-degree mark.
If you're in Labrador, enjoy the warmth while it lasts. A cold front will sweep southward through the region on Thursday, bringing noticeably cooler air. That front will eventually push into Newfoundland as well, leading to a cooler end to the work week. As it does, a developing area of low pressure may bring rain and even some wet snow to parts of southeast Labrador and Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula early Friday morning. Yes, it's meteorological summer, and yes, we're still talking about snow.
The good news is that system looks fairly quick-moving. Behind it, conditions should improve for the weekend across much of Newfoundland and Labrador. Temperatures won't be as warm as Wednesday, but the weather overall is looking reasonably pleasant.
There is one feature I'll be keeping a close eye on. Forecast models continue to hint at a cutoff low developing southeast of Newfoundland this weekend and into next week. If that system develops and drifts close enough, it could have a significant impact on the weather across eastern Newfoundland. Right now, the forecast remains favorable, but that setup bears watching.
Meanwhile, Labrador looks poised for a quick rebound after Thursday and Friday's cooldown. By early next week, temperatures in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area could surge back into the mid-20s, providing one of the strongest signs yet that summer is finally starting to gain some traction.
