Premier’s Wildfire Update – August 13, 2025

Premier Hogan says no new evacuation alerts or orders have been issued overnight. All previous alerts remain in place, and anyone in alert areas should keep monitoring official government channels in case that changes.

Federal Support & New Resources

  • Spoke with Prime Minister Mark Carney last night — Ottawa is offering continued logistical help, evacuation center setup, and firefighter transportation.

  • Province has secured a Sikorsky S-92 Raptor helicopter from Alberta with a water capacity of over 1,300 gallons.

Fire Situations

  • Kingston Fire: 6,400+ hectares; growth on northern boundary. Fuel break construction progressing well. More heavy equipment on site than needed. Head of fire just below Northern Bay. Air and ground support working both edges today.

  • Martin Lake Fire: ~800 hectares. Still east of Great Rattling River and 300–400 m from Bay d’Espoir Highway (which remains closed). No confirmed structure loss. 30 firefighters plus multiple helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft on scene. Ferry to Bay L’Argent running “load and go.”

  • Paddy’s Pond Fire: Remains hot and smoky. Air support slowed growth yesterday. Fire ~250 m from Trans-Canada Highway on the south side; northern growth prompted Three Island Pond evacuations. Six tankers on site today (four NL, two Ontario).

Fire Ban Enforcement & Restrictions

  • Two fines issued: one for operating an excavator in a wooded area, one for mulching during extreme fire index.

  • Province-wide off-road vehicle restriction on forested land until Aug. 17 (may be extended).
