Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Friday into Saturday, but Sunday Looks Much Better

After a brilliant Thursday for much of Newfoundland and parts of Labrador, the weather will take a turn as we head into Friday.
The scattered showers and thunderstorms that developed Thursday afternoon will fade across the Island by around midnight. They may linger longer in Labrador, but our attention will quickly turn to an area of low pressure approaching Newfoundland from the southwest.
Rain will begin reaching southwestern Newfoundland, the Burin Peninsula and the Avalon early Friday morning. From there, it will spread across much of the Island and into southeastern Labrador.
Friday will be a cloudy, damp and cooler day for most areas, with temperatures generally in the teens across Newfoundland. Fog will also be an issue along parts of the south coast.
Some of the rain could be heavy, particularly across southwestern and central Newfoundland. Rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm are possible from Burgeo through Port aux Basques and the Codroy Valley, as well as around Grand Falls-Windsor, Buchans, Badger and Millertown. A rainfall warning may be needed for some areas.
There will also be a risk of thunderstorms across much of Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador. Not everyone will see a storm, but any stronger storms that develop could produce heavy downpours, frequent thunder and lightning, and wind gusts near 60 km/h.
The best chance of thunderstorms across central and eastern Newfoundland will come during the morning and early afternoon. As the low moves across the Island, the scattered showers and storms will gradually transition into a steadier, more widespread rainfall.
Most of the heavier rain will lift north and east of Newfoundland by early Saturday morning, but the low will be slow to leave completely.
Central and eastern Newfoundland can expect lingering clouds and drizzle Saturday, along with a somewhat breezy wind. Gusts may briefly exceed 40 km/h over northeastern Newfoundland, the Bonavista Peninsula and the Avalon during the afternoon.
Conditions should gradually improve as Saturday progresses, with the nicest weather expected across southern Newfoundland and into Labrador.
Sunday remains the pick of the weekend. Most areas should enjoy a much drier and brighter day before the unsettled pattern returns next week. Rain or showers will be possible again Tuesday and potentially Wednesday as the active August weather continues across Newfoundland and Labrador.
