Heat Peaks Wednesday Before Cooler Air and Rain Return

If you enjoyed today's warmth, Wednesday will be your last chance to soak it in before Newfoundland and Labrador's weather takes another turn.

Temperatures climbed to some impressive levels Tuesday afternoon. St. John's reached 26°C, making it the warmest day in the city since last August. Inland areas were even hotter, with Badger nearing 30°C, Deer Lake and Terra Nova National Park reaching 28°C, and Goose Bay becoming the first location in the province to hit 30°C this year.

That summer heat isn't going away just yet.

Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch, with highs pushing 28 to 32°C across much of Labrador and upper 20s common across central and eastern Newfoundland. Some locations central and northeast will get a little flirty with 30! Along the south coast and other areas exposed to onshore west/northwest winds, temperatures will stay noticeably cooler.

The heat, however, comes with growing concerns.

Heat Warnings remain in effect for parts of Labrador, while smoke from ongoing wildfires continues to impact air quality across western Labrador. That same smoke has also drifted over much of Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada, creating hazy skies that many of us noticed today. In most places, the smoke is high in the atmosphere, but some has mixed down to the surface, producing that familiar campfire smell.

With hot, dry conditions persisting, the wildfire danger remains high to extreme across many parts of the province. It's critical to follow all provincial fire restrictions. Even a single spark can quickly become a fast-moving wildfire under these conditions.

The weather does begin to change late Wednesday. Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across Labrador as a cold front approaches from the west. Those storms may continue into Wednesday night before cooler air begins spilling into the region.

By Thursday, that cooler air reaches Newfoundland as well. A low-pressure system passing near eastern Newfoundland is expected to bring cloud, fog, drizzle and showers to eastern areas, with the exact extent of steadier rain still becoming clearer. Either way, Thursday marks the end of this brief heat wave as temperatures return much closer to seasonal values.

The cooler pattern sticks around through the weekend. Highs generally settle back into the teens and low 20s, although there should still be some pleasant weather mixed in between a few showers.

Enjoy the heat while it's here! For those of you wanting a break, it won’t be much longer…
