Friday Improves, Then a Nice Weekend Takes Shape

It was a tale of two seasons across Newfoundland Thursday, with some areas of eastern Newfoundland feeling more like fall while the West Coast continued to swelter in summer heat and humidity.
Temperatures around Deer Lake, Corner Brook and Badger were roughly 10 degrees warmer Thursday afternoon than areas such as St. John’s and Cape Race. Wind direction and a lack of sunshine kept eastern areas much cooler, while sunshine and humid air helped temperatures climb farther west. Dew points across parts of western, central and southern Newfoundland were approaching 19°C or 20°C, making for a very muggy afternoon.
Humidex values climbed into the lower and middle 30s in some areas, including 34 in Deer Lake, 31 in Corner Brook, 33 in Millertown and 31 in Badger. The good news for anyone tired of the humidity is that some drier air should arrive for the weekend, offering at least a temporary break from the muggy conditions.
Heavy Showers Continue Thursday Evening
The humid air also helped fuel some locally heavy showers Thursday afternoon. Heavy rain was moving through portions of the eastern Avalon, with additional showers approaching parts of the St. John’s metro area, Conception Bay South and the northern Southern Shore.
While some of these showers could produce a quick burst of heavy rain, they should generally be short-lived.
Conditions quiet down considerably across most of Newfoundland and Labrador Thursday night. Some showers and thunderstorms will linger in Labrador, with activity potentially passing through the Rigolet area Friday morning.
On Newfoundland, a few showers — and possibly a rumble of thunder — may develop around Bay St. George and the Port aux Basques area Friday morning before weakening as they move east and northeast. A few isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms may also pop up over the interior of the Island Friday afternoon.
A Warmer Friday in Eastern Newfoundland
Overnight lows will generally remain in the middle to upper teens across much of Newfoundland, while Labrador City falls to around 7°C and Mary’s Harbour remains considerably milder near 14°C.
Friday's highs will range through the teens and 20s across Newfoundland and Labrador. Eastern Newfoundland should be warmer and sunnier than Thursday, so despite somewhat lower humidity, it may feel considerably warmer.
Another Blast of Summer Heat Next Week?
The more interesting part of the forecast may arrive next week.
A ridge of high pressure is expected to build into the region while increasingly humid air returns northward. That combination could set the stage for another stretch of true summer-like heat across parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Current forecasts have temperatures reaching the lower to middle 20s Monday through Wednesday across much of Newfoundland, but those numbers may ultimately prove too conservative.
Temperatures higher in the atmosphere are forecast to reach roughly 14°C to 17°C during the early and middle part of next week. If conditions line up properly, that could support surface temperatures reaching approximately 26°C to 29°C across parts of Newfoundland between late Monday and Wednesday.
There is still plenty of time for the details to change, but the overall pattern is one worth watching. After a temporary break from the humidity this weekend, summer may have another round of heat waiting for Newfoundland next week.
