Even Conception Bay South isn’t escaping the drizzle and fog this week. The view earlier today from the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club webcam tells the story: low cloud, damp air, and little sign of the sun. Gander and much of central, too, is seeing the RDF today — that familiar mix of rain, drizzle, and fog — while southern areas of the Island managed a few sunny breaks this afternoon, one of the few spots on the Island to catch a glimpse of blue sky.
A Cool, Damp Northerly Flow
Satellite and radar imagery show a broad area of cloud stretching from Labrador across Newfoundland and into the Maritimes, where parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are finally seeing some desperately needed rain. Unfortunately, most of Newfoundland and Labrador remain quite dry. The drizzle many are seeing isn’t meaningful precipitation — and we could really use some.
A persistent northerly wind is the culprit. It’s keeping temperatures cool and air moisture trapped over the Island and along the coastlines. As of mid-afternoon Thursday, temperatures were in the single digits for much of NL, expect the lower teens along south-facing shores.
Fog Thickens Tonight and Friday
The fog may become more widespread tonight and into Friday morning as higher humidity moves in. Visibility early Friday could drop to around 500 m in St. John’s, the Avalon Peninslua and the northeast coast. The fog will vary in density through the day but likely won’t clear much until late Friday night — and could even return on Saturday.
Still No Substantial Rain
Aside from a few light showers over the Northern Peninsula and western Labrador, rainfall totals remain minimal — a couple of millimetres for most of the Island, 10–20 mm in parts of Labrador. The next organized system stays mostly offshore this weekend. It’ll generate some large swells and strong winds but miss most of Newfoundland entirely.
“We need a good storm,” Eddie said in the forecast. “We’re in a drought, no doubt about it.”
Weekend Outlook
Temperatures hold steady through the weekend — highs of 8–10 °C across much of the Island, low teens in the south, and 8–12 °C in Labrador. Some cooler air is expected in Labrador early next week, but still no sign of any true November chill.
So if you’re in the south and you like mild, quiet weather, enjoy it while it lasts. For the rest of us, the wait for real rain continues.
