Evacuation Order issued for Towns of Small Point–Adam’s Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove and Kingston Due to Wildfire

An evacuation order has been issued for the towns of Small Point–Adam’s Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove and Kingston due to extreme wildfire behaviour in the area. The wildfire is currently approximately one kilometre from the community.

Firefighting Efforts Underway

Water bombers, helicopters, and ground crews are actively engaged in suppression efforts to control the fire and protect nearby communities. A reception centre has been established at Persalvic School Complex in Victoria for residents affected by the evacuation.

Provincial Response and Updates

The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is at Level 2 and continues to monitor the situation closely. Emergency management partners have been mobilized to provide support and resources as needed.

Residents can find continuous updates on conditions, resources, and assistance at www.gov.nl.ca/alerts and through the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s official social media channels. Information on the status, size, and location of active wildfires is available via the NL Active Wildfire Dashboard.

Drone Use Prohibited Near Wildfires

The operation of drones near active fires is strictly prohibited as it interferes with the safe operation of water bombers. Unauthorized drone activity can result in fines and legal action. For more information on safe and legal drone operation, visit the Transport Canada website.

Safety and Preparedness Information

Residents are urged to remain prepared and take steps to protect themselves and their properties. A basic emergency kit should include enough food, water, batteries, a portable radio, important documents, and prescription medications for at least 72 hours. More details are available at gov.nl.ca/beprepared.

Property owners can also reduce wildfire risks by:

  • Maintaining a 1.5-metre non-combustible zone around the home.

  • Cleaning and screening gutters to remove flammable debris.

  • Using fire-resistant roofing materials.

  • Clearing and enclosing decks to prevent debris buildup.

  • Storing firewood away from the home.

  • Keeping grass and weeds trimmed.

  • Using FireSmart-approved vegetation when landscaping.
