Cooler Temps and Less Wind Highlight Tuesday Evening’s Forecast

Southern and southwestern Newfoundland got absolutely soaked between late last night and this morning. Some places saw rain literally (almost) coming down in buckets. Stephenville picked up close to 80 mm, and St. Albans, Wreckhouse, and Port aux Basques all saw significant totals too.

Even Gander got in on the action—and that’s great news. Parts of northeastern Newfoundland have been in serious need of rainfall, and this gave them a solid dose. I have an unofficil report of over 20 mm in Lumsden. That should do wonder for the fire situation in Musgrave Harbour and Chance Harbour.

Tonight: Cooler & Breezy

The system responsible for all this rain is pulling away, and behind it, things are turning breezy and cooler — especially across eastern and northeastern Newfoundland. As of late afternoon, St. John’s was hovering around 9°C with winds near 40 km/h. But those winds are dropping off this evening, and it’ll be a calm, cool night across the Island with lows in the low teens — maybe even single digits in some spots.

Wednesday: A Beauty for Most

Tomorrow’s shaping up to be lovely. We’ll see sunshine for much of the Island with temperatures rebounding into the upper teens and low 20s. Labrador starts off clear as well, but clouds increase in the afternoon — especially in the west — with showers moving in late day and into the evening.

Thursday: Rain Returns for Many

That late-day system in Labrador Wednesday will linger into early Thursday and then push across the Straits and into Newfoundland. Rain becomes more widespread during the second half of the day across the western third Island, so if you’ve got outdoor plans Thursday — aim for the first half. Temperatures will reach the low 20s in Newfoundland and stay in the teens in Labrador.

Friday: More Showers Possible

Friday looks similar — another shot at 20s for much of the Island, but there’s also the chance for more showers to develop. It won’t be a washout, but you’ll want to keep an eye on the radar, especially later in the day.

Weekend Outlook: Mixed, Breezy & Fishy

Saturday looks like the more unsettled of the two weekend days with a chance of showers, while Sunday’s shaping up to be the nicer one — especially across much of the Island. Both days are looking breezy, though, which could play a role if you’re heading out on the water.

Speaking of which — with the recreational groundfish fishery open, I’ll have a separate Fishery Forecast posted later this week. Keep an eye on the website for that!
