After a warm and, in some places, downright summer-like Thursday, Newfoundland is about to get a reminder that it's still only early June.

A cold front pushing south across the province tonight will bring a dramatic change in temperatures by Friday. While much of Central and Eastern Newfoundland climbed into the 20s Thursday afternoon, those readings will be a distant memory by Friday evening.

The first signs of the front were already visible Thursday, with clouds and showers spreading across the Northern Peninsula and the Straits of Labrador while much cooler air poured into Labrador. That same cooler air will continue working south overnight and through the day Friday.

The Northern Peninsula will see the most rain from this system, with some areas potentially picking up between 15 and 30 mm before the showers taper off Friday morning. Parts of southeastern Labrador and higher elevations of the Northern Peninsula may even see a few wet snowflakes mixed in before daybreak.

For most of the Island, however, rainfall amounts will be minimal. A few showers may brush areas around Bonavista Bay and parts of Notre Dame Bay early Friday before skies gradually improve.

The bigger story will be the temperatures.

St. John's may start Friday relatively mild, but once the cold front passes, temperatures will tumble through the afternoon. By supper time, readings will be down near 5°C, with some areas approaching the freezing mark overnight. Similar cooling is expected across the southern Avalon, Burin Peninsula, and South Coast.

If you're planning to get outside Friday, the morning will be your best opportunity. Conditions should be relatively pleasant before the colder air settles in later in the day.

Looking ahead, the weekend appears cool but generally quiet. Temperatures will slowly recover, although they will remain below the levels seen earlier this week.

Attention then turns to a potentially significant rainfall event beginning Sunday.

A slow-moving area of low pressure is expected to spread rain across much of Newfoundland Sunday and keep it around through at least Monday, and possibly into Tuesday. Current projections suggest widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 75 mm across large portions of the Island, with some interior and southern areas potentially exceeding 75 mm.

It's still several days away, but it's a system worth watching closely. Slow-moving lows this time of year can produce substantial rainfall, and early indications suggest this one could deliver a soaking to many parts of the province.

The good news? Once that system finally moves away, temperatures and weather conditions should improve again by the middle of next week.
