Blowing Snow Advisories, Winter Storm Warning and Wind Warnings Issued for Newfoundland by Environment Canada for Saturday Night and Sunday
A complex weather pattern will set up shop over the region between later today and Sunday as two weather features phase southeast of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula. The combination of these two features will drive high winds (northerly gusts to 100 km/h) and the potential for moderate to heavy snowfall between this evening and later Sunday. Ahead of the weather’s arrival, Environment Canada has issued several weather alerts for the Island, and a few remain in place for Labrador, where this system will wind down later today.
I’d like to point out that there is considerable uncertainty, even at this point, as to just how much snow will fall over the Avalon Peninsula and specifically the southeast Avalon, Southern Shore and the St. John’s Metro.
The alerts state that 5 to 15 cm will fall for the St. John’s area and up to 20 cm on the southern shore, while up to 25 cm is possible around the Trepassey area and the eastern side of St. Mary’s Bay. I would like to see some wording that suggests that all areas may see significantly higher amounts if this system tracks a smidge further west. If that is the case, we will be looking at amounts in some of these areas well over 30 cm.
Keep in mind, I’m not trying to fear-monger or scare anyone. My goal is to give you the most likely outcome, and while lower-end snowfall is more likely, Environment Canada’s alerts take this route, the chance of a higher-end snowfall is more significant than I’d like to see at this stage in the game.
