A Quieter Weekend Ahead — But One Thing to Watch Sunday Night
Friday the 13th might make some people uneasy — but there’s nothing scary about the weekend forecast across Newfoundland and Labrador.
That said, there are a few small “flies in the ointment” to keep an eye on.

Snow Tapers Off Tonight
An area of low pressure that has kept things unsettled over the past couple of days is finally pushing northeast into the North Atlantic. As that happens, snowfall in many areas, along with numerous flurries, will gradually wind down overnight and through Saturday. Wind speeds will also slow.
The exception? Parts of western Newfoundland and much of Labrador.
A band of steady snow stretching from around Wabush south toward Bay St. George is expected to linger into Saturday. This could bring light to moderate snowfall from Corner Brook south toward just north of Port aux Basques, and inland as well. Travel along portions of the Trans-Canada Highway and the Burgio Highway could be impacted at times.
For most lower elevations in western Newfoundland, expect an additional 2 to 5 cm of sloppy, wet snow through Saturday evening. Some areas may see slightly more, especially in higher terrain. Some areas will also see rain.
In western Labrador, particularly near and east of Wabush, 5 to 10 cm is possible before the snow tapers. Totals drop off sharply as you move westward toward Quebec.
Temperatures: Mild for February
Overnight lows in Labrador won’t be especially harsh:
Around -1°C in the south
Near -11°C in the north
Around -14°C in Lab West
Saturday highs:
Near +1°C south
Around -4°C north
Near -5°C in Lab West
On the Island, it’s a relatively mild setup:
Overnight lows between -2°C and 0°C
Saturday highs ranging from -1°C to +3°C
Clarenville may be one of the warmer spots near +3°C
Expect a generally cloudy Saturday with some sunny breaks mixed in.
Sunday: Quiet, But Watching Late
Sunday looks mostly quiet across both Labrador and Newfoundland. A few flurries are possible, but nothing major.
However, attention turns to Sunday night into Monday.
An energetic low will move out of Hudson’s Bay, track across the Maritimes, then curve southeast around the Avalon Peninsula. Right now, the bulk of its snowfall looks to stay offshore.
But here’s the caveat: If the track shifts even slightly closer to the Southern Shore, some of that snow could brush eastern Newfoundland late Sunday into Monday.
It’s not locked in — but it’s worth watching.
Looking Ahead to Next Week
Temperatures remain fairly steady through early next week.
After the potential Sunday night system, the next more substantial weather maker looks to arrive around Wednesday. That system could bring:
Rain and snow to eastern areas
Snow to central, western, and the south coast
Snow showers across parts of Labrador
Colder air may also try to return midweek, especially in Lab West, where highs could drop back toward -16°C to -17°C after the recent milder stretch.
Overall, this weekend trends quieter — just a few localized snow areas to manage and one system to monitor late Sunday.
I’ll have updates as we move through the weekend.
I’ll have my next update posted tomorrow morning!
