A Quiet Christmas Eve gives way to a stormy Christmas Day and Boxing Day across much of NL
If you’re hoping for a quiet stretch of holiday weather… sorry 😏
There are two winter storms on the way for Newfoundland and Labrador — the first arriving Christmas Day into Boxing Day, and the second late Boxing Day into the weekend. Some areas could see significant snowfall, strong winds, and tricky travel conditions.
Let’s break it down.

❄️ Tonight & Christmas Eve: Calm Before the Storm
Light snow continues this evening across parts of the Avalon, with up to 5 cm locally, tapering off overnight. Flurries elsewhere fade this evening, setting us up for a quiet and cold Christmas Eve.
Overnight lows: –7 to –15°C across the Island
Labrador: –20s to near –30°C under clear skies
Christmas Eve: Mostly sunny, minimal weather issues — best travel day
🌨️ Storm #1: Christmas Day into Boxing Day
Environment and Climate Change Canada has already issued special weather statements, with winter storm warnings possible as this system strengthens rapidly south of Newfoundland.
Timing
Snow begins early Christmas morning on the Avalon and Burin Peninsula
Spreads north and west through the day
Northern Peninsula & Labrador later Christmas Day into the night
Key Uncertainty
The biggest question: Does the Avalon change to rain?
Some models keep it mostly snow
Others bring a brief rain/mix midday Christmas Day
Either way, heavy snow falls first.
Expected Snowfall (by noon Boxing Day)
Avalon, Bonavista Peninsula, NE Coast, Gander area: 15–30 cm
Central & Northern Peninsula: 10–15 cm
Southeast Labrador & Strait region: 15–30 cm
West Coast: Minimal (higher terrain sees more)
Wind
Gusts 80–100 km/h, higher in exposed coastal areas
Blowing snow and reduced visibility likely
❄️ Storm #2: Boxing Day into the Weekend
The second system arrives late Boxing Day afternoon, and this one is slower — meaning longer-lasting snowfall.
Snow intensifies Friday night
Continues through Saturday, possibly into Sunday
Some areas, particularly through Central and the Northeast Coast, could see 30–60 cm (1–2 feet) if it stays all snow
Again, the Avalon sits near a rain/snow line, but even a mix would come after another heavy round of snow.
🚗 Travel & Planning Tips
Travel Christmas Eve if possible
Boxing Day morning is the best window before round two
Expect shovel alerts, especially Christmas Day and Saturday
Power outages possible due to wind + heavy snow
I’ll have my next update posted over the weekend.
