Wind Gusts Peak Tonight As Intense Low Departs Into The North Atlantic

Strong winds are ramping up this evening across much of eastern and northeastern Newfoundland, with peak gusts expected between roughly 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Some exposed areas could see gusts exceeding 120–130 km/h, particularly along the east and northeast coasts.

These winds are being driven by a powerful area of low pressure located east of St. Anthony and north of Twillingate. As the system pulls away later tonight, winds will gradually ease — with a noticeable improvement after midnight.

Regional Impacts

  • Avalon Peninsula & St. John’s Metro: Winds continue to strengthen this evening, peaking around 9:00 PM with gusts potentially over 120 km/h.

  • Northeast Coast & Bonavista Peninsula: Similar timing, with peak winds late evening before easing overnight.

  • Central & Southwest Newfoundland: Winds are also strong but should begin to ease a bit earlier overnight.

  • Western Newfoundland, Northern Peninsula & Southeastern Labrador: Heavy snow continues this evening before tapering off late tonight.

The combination of snow squalls, blowing snow, and strong winds has made for difficult travel conditions in some areas today, particularly across western Newfoundland and Labrador.

Snowfall Update

Additional snowfall through tonight includes:

  • Central & Eastern Newfoundland: A few centimetres.

  • West Coast (including Corner Brook & Rocky Harbour): Up to 15 cm more.

  • Northern Peninsula & Southeastern Labrador: Local totals may exceed 40 cm in some areas once all is said and done.

Snow and flurries will gradually taper off overnight, with much quieter conditions expected by Tuesday morning.

Looking Ahead

  • Tuesday: Calmer winds, some sunshine for much of the island, with a few lingering flurries in western areas.

  • Later This Week: Milder air returns Thursday and Friday, bringing a messy mix for southern and southeastern Newfoundland and more snow for northern areas and Labrador.

  • Next Week: A colder, potentially snowier pattern may develop as colder air pushes eastward.

Stay safe this evening, especially in high wind areas, and check back for continued updates as conditions improve overnight.
