Good Thursday Morning!

Here are today’s highlights:

  • Temps are in the single digits above freezing as we start the day across the Province.

  • We are seeing areas of dense fog and drizzle over parts of eastern/northeast Newfoundland

  • Temps today get stuck in the single digits in the east, but reach the teens farther west and through much of the Big Land.

  • The blocking pattern that set up shop yesterday is going nowhere fast. Chance for rain increases Friday into Saturday and again from late Sunday into Monday… parts of eastern Newfoundland may see wet snow Monday (not the Avalon).

Newfoundland’s Forecast

The blocking pattern that moved in on the heels of Monday's warmth (in some areas) is still firmly in charge across the region, and will be for quite some time. The Metro area is sitting around 2º this morning with an easterly wind sustained near 30 km/h. This makes it feel like it’s below freezing; visibility is reduced to 800 metres at the airport, as of 5:30 AM NDT. Gander and parts of central/northeastern Newfoundland are likely in the fog as well, with visibility reported to be at 400 metres and the temperature at 0°C at Gander International. We aren’t seeing as much low cloud and fog to the west; in fact, some of the webcams even show sunny skies in the Bay St. George area and the Northern Peninsula.

Today, between the high pressure to the north and the low pressure to the south, the easterly flow keeps pumping cold Atlantic air in from the northeast, and until that breaks down, the northeast coast stays grey, damp, and cool. Eastern/northeast areas will peak in the mid to upper single digits this afternoon.

There is a chance drier air moves in later today, which could open the door to sunny breaks over much of the area. I’ll be watching the charts closely and will provide updates accordingly!

Newfoundland's forecast for today - May 27, 2026

Head west, and you're in a completely different weather world. Much of western Newfoundland is starting the morning cloudy, with temperatures in the lower single digits. Expect partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-teens over much of the area — nearly double the Avalon's high today. It will be a bit cooler in areas of onshore winds (eastern side of the GNP). There's a slight chance of a flurry or snow shower over the higher terrain of the Long Range in the mix (late May, and yes, still possible up high). The interior and the West Coast simply don't deal with the blocking onshore flow that keeps the east pinned down, and the forecast map today reflects that split very clearly.

Friday night into Saturday deserves attention in the eastern and central areas of the Island. A developing low is set to deliver steady rain to eastern and northeast Newfoundland, along with some wind gusts near or over 50 km/h. Parts of central may be in line for a rain and wet snow mix on Saturday as well. A more substantial system looks to bring rain and possibly snow Sunday into Monday.

Forecast animation of how the low’s play out Friday night into Saturwsday and Sunday into late Monday.

Labrador’s Forecast

The Big Land is in the best shape in the province right now. Happy Valley-Goose Bay is partly cloudy at 6°C this morning with a light southerly breeze, and highs are forecast to reach 16°C this afternoon — excellent late-May conditions. Mild weather holds through Thursday before temperatures ease back slightly into the low to mid-teens to close out the week. The Straits and the North Coast should see a decent mix of cloud and sun through the day with single-digit highs along the coast. Labrador West continues to enjoy some of the better weather in the province over the next couple of days.
