Good Wednesday morning!
Here are today’s highlights:
Areas of showers are located over eastern Newfoundland this morning and will be with us for a few more hours.
Pockets of rain and wet snow are found over western and southwest Newfoundland this morning, and while it’s chilly (temps near 1ºC), there doesn’t appear to be much snow falling in the west just yet.
Rain and snow are falling in Labrador. Cartwright’s airport is already reporting light snow.
Up to 5 cm of snow is expected along Newfoundland’s West Coast today in the lower terrain; more than 10 cm will fall inland over higher terrain.
10 to 15 will fall over much of southeast Labrador.
A Wind Warning is in effect for portions of Labrador’s southern coast.
Many areas of NL will be breezy today, with gusts of 60 to 80 km/h expected.
Today’s Forecast
Our area of low pressure, currently near Twillingate, will move north of Newfoundland and intensify as it does so. The atmospheric response will be an intense area of rain and snow west and northwest of the low’s track. This places western Newfoundland, the Northern Peninsula, and southeast Labrador in the path of that rain and snow. Lower elevations will generally see rain or a rain/wet-snow mix, with very little accumulation (less than 5 cm). Inland, over higher terrain, it will be a different story. Some of those areas will see 10 to 15 cm of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. The higher elevations around Corner Brook, including the communities of Massey Drive and Wiltondale, come to mind when I think of accumulating snowfall today.
Remember, this is in mid-May, and the roads will generally remain wet unless it’s snowing quite hard. I do think that will be the case in some areas of western Newfoundland, but more widespread in southeast Labrador.
Expected snowfall between this morning and late this evening. May 13, 2026,
Meanwhile, conditions will be different in southeast Labrador, where snow will be more widespread and uniform. I expect 10 to 15+ cm to fall over much of that area today, essentially from near Rigolt to just north of the Straits and into the Mealy Mountains. Route 510 will be very wintry in some areas, and I would advise against travel into and out of this area today if you can avoid it.
Expected snowfall between this morning and late this evening. May 13, 2026,
This future satellite and radar animation illustrates the timing of this very nicely and will give a good idea of where rain and snow are expected today. The eastern and central parts of Newfoundland, along with the South Coast, will see some showers this morning, but the weather will generally improve as the day progresses.
The wind will be an issue today as our low departs, and most of us will see gusts of 60 to 80+ km/h from the west or northwest later today into this evening. The exception will be parts of the Labrador Coast, from near Norman Bay to Black Tickle, where gusts will be as high as 100 km/h this evening into tonight, as a bit of a low-level jet develops on the back side of our departing low.
Today's wind gust forecast for the Metro area. May 13, 2026.
Temperatures today will peak in the single digits above freezing across much of the Province. The warmest areas will be in the east, while the coolest will be in western Newfoundland and southeast Labrador, where temperatures will be closer to freezing.
