Good Wednesday morning!
Today is Regatta Day, and at just before 6 AM, Keith White, Vice President of the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, made the call that the Regatta is a go for today. The weather in the St. John’s Metro and around “The Pond” today will be great for people taking in the races, but not exactly ideal for the rowers. The reason is the wind. Wind speeds today will be higher than many rowers (myself included when I was at it) hope for on the Big Day. The direction will be from the south-southwest or southwest. That’s a wind direction that essentially blows right down the pond toward Quidi Vidi Gut.
This makes for a bit of a lop at the bottom (turning buoys) of the pond while the top is relatively calm. It also makes for some slower rowing, so I don’t expect any record times today at this point. In my opinion, the speeds are safe enough for rowing, and the forecast(s) for tomorrow and Friday look no better. Good luck to all those taking part today!
The wind speeds look to peak around the mid part of the day, and then will start coming down a bit in time for the championships. The first championship race will be at 6:30 PM, and the final race will be at 7 PM. Speaking of those championship races…
I will be part of NTV’s coverage tonight of the races, and I’ll be back on the air and on NTV+ starting around 6:30 PM this evening. So for the first time in a while I get to say… SEE YOU ON NTV THIS EVENING.
THIS MORNING AND THE FORECAST FOR TODAY
We are waking up to comfortable temperatures across much of the Province this morning with readings in the teens on the Island and teens to single digits in Labrador. Below are the temperatuers as of just after 6 AM this morning.
The forecast for today hasn’t changed much from yesterday. In fact, here is my quote from last evening’s forecast post:
“An area of low pressure is going to approach northern and western Labrador from eastern Quebec, and that will spark off a fair bit of afternoon shower and thunderstorm activity over the Big Land. There will also be some afternoon showers (and possible thunderstorms) over parts of eastern Newfoundland. These look to be primarily west of the Avalon, but I’ll keep an eye on the radar in the afternoon. Highs creep into the upper teens and lower 20s across the Island and teens and 20s in Labrador.”
The temperatures in Labrador West will rise quickly into the middle and upper teens this morning and hang there into the afternoon before falling as a cold front moves into the area. Along with the showers, there will be a fairly sharp temperature drop in the western parts of the Big Land later today, setting the stage for a cool night in the region.
The forecast for tomorrow and Friday looks fairly benign across the Province, and even the weekend is looking that way too. But there are some details to work out. I’ll have your full forecast for the next few days posted this afternoon.
Be sure to check out my Facebook page later as I’ll be LIVE from the Quidi Vidi Brewery Tent on Quidi Vidi Lake around 4 PM this afternoon. Following that, I’ll see you on NTV this evening starting at 6:30 PM for Championship Race coverage from the Royal St. John’s Regatta.
Have a great day!
