Warm Air, Heavy Rain, And a Flash Freeze: A Wild Weather Swing Across NL

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀

If your radar is looking green today, it’s not because of the holiday — it’s because a powerful storm system is moving through Newfoundland and Labrador, bringing a messy mix of rain, fog, wind, and rapidly changing temperatures.

🌡️ Why It’s So Warm

This system is tapping into tropical moisture and warmth, pushing it north into the province. These setups often bring:

  • Unseasonably warm temperatures

  • Heavy rainfall

  • Rapid changes when colder air returns

And that last part is key…

⚠️ Flash Freeze Risk (Especially Labrador)

As the cold front moves through tonight, temperatures will drop fast.

In areas like Happy Valley–Goose Bay, temperatures will:

  • Be near +10°C this evening

  • Drop to the minus teens by morning

That means standing water will freeze quickly, creating dangerous icy conditions for the Wednesday morning commute.

👉 If you're out early: watch for black ice and consider a bit of salt around the house.

🌧️ Rainfall Totals

By the time this wraps up:

  • Southern & Southwestern NL: 30–60 mm

  • Avalon & Burin Peninsulas: 5–15 mm

Most of this falls overnight into Wednesday morning.

🌬️ Wind + Temperature Crash

It’s been windy — and while winds will gradually ease:

  • Labrador calms by midday Wednesday

  • Eastern Newfoundland takes until Wednesday morning

Then comes the big shift:

  • Temperatures fall through the day Wednesday

  • Rain ends as flurries

  • Wind chills drop well below freezing

❄️ What to Expect Wednesday

  • Morning: Mild, breezy, leftover rain

  • Midday: Cooling quickly

  • Evening: Below freezing everywhere, flurries ending

By tomorrow night, many areas will feel like winter again.

🌤️ The Good News

Once this system clears out, things look surprisingly calm:

  • More seasonal temperatures

  • Quiet weather through much of the week

  • No major systems immediately on deck
