Hurricane Melissa Brushing Eastern Newfoundland Tonight

Hurricane Melissa — now a post-tropical storm — will graze the Avalon Peninsula overnight, bringing wind and rain to eastern Newfoundland. The system, still packing hurricane-force winds, is about 1,000 km south of Cape Race and is projected to pass southeast of the Avalon Peninsula overnight. While we are expected to see tropical storm-force gusts over the eastern Avalon, anything hurricane-force (120 km/h or greater) should remain well offshore.

For St. John’s and surrounding areas, winds will peak around midnight to 2 a.m., ease briefly, and then freshen again into Saturday morning as what’s left of Melissa moves away. Saturday will stay breezy across most of the province.

A Wreckhouse wind warning remains in effect for this afternoon and evening, with gusts reaching up to 120 km/h. The wind speeds there aren’t related to Melissa.

Rain and Trick-or-Treat Timing

Rain will be spreading eastward tonight. Around 6 p.m., precipitation is mainly over Labrador and western Newfoundland — offering a short window for trick-or-treating before the rain fills in. By 8 p.m., steady rain reaches most of the Island, becoming heavy at times overnight as Melissa passes by.

By Saturday morning, the rain transitions to showers across much of Newfoundland, with mild temperatures through the day.

Rainfall totals are expected to reach 15–30 mm across eastern Newfoundland, with similar amounts farther west. Pockets of heavier rain are possible along the west and southwest coasts, and locally in central areas due to a secondary system following behind Melissa.

Labrador’s First Snowfall of the Season

That second system will deliver Labrador’s first widespread snowfall of the season.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued:

  • A Snowfall Warning for Eagle River

  • A Special Weather Statement for the Upper Lake Melville region

Snow is expected to begin tonight and continue through Saturday, with accumulations of over 15 cm possible in higher elevations west of Cartwright Junction and in the Mealy Mountains. Lower elevations, including Goose Bay, will likely see much less accumulation.

Weekend Outlook

Saturday will be mild across Newfoundland with highs reaching into the teens in some areas, though still breezy. By Sunday, temperatures cool considerably — especially in western Newfoundland and Labrador, where highs may stay below freezing for the first time this season.

Long-range outlooks suggest this cooler pattern will hold through the week ahead.
