Tuesday Morning’s Weather Briefing — September 22, 2026
Good Tuesday Morning! Here are today’s highlights
Most of the rain and shower activity moves offshore this morning; showers will continue at various times of the day for the GNP, the West Coast, central and northeastern Newfoundland, and the Avalon this afternoon or evening.
A period of northerly wind gusts of 50 to 70 km/h will rotate south and east across Newfoundland today behind a departing low.
High temperatures peak in the lower to mid-teens on the Island and upper single-digit to mid-teens in Labrador.
Sunshine takes hold in Labrador today and will rule the Island for the next several days as a large high builds into the region.

Newfoundland & Labrador Today
Showers and areas of rain are still moving across eastern and western Newfoundland at this hour of the morning. The most current radar image (as of when you’re reading this) is above. If it’s past 8 or 9 AM, the radar is likely clear, as by then most of this activity should be over across the Island. Meanwhile, temperatures at the start of the day range from the single digits to near 10ºC on the Island and between 2ºC and 8ºC throughout Labrador.
The showers will be stubborn to depart the Northern Peninsula, the West Coast as far south as Bay St. George, and central and northeastern Newfoundland as far east as the Bonavista Peninsula. Areas south of those locations will see a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day once the morning showers wrap up. The Avalon will be the exception, as a few showers will roll in late this afternoon or early this evening. Temperatures peak in the lower to mid-teens across the Island today. Labrador will see sunny skies and highs reaching the single digits to lower teens this afternoon.
There will be a period of gusty winds today that will rotate from the Northern Peninsula this morning to more areas of the Island this afternoon before exiting the east coast this evening. Now, we’re not talking wind gusts like Saturday, but we are talking northerly gusts as high as 50 to 70 km/h over exposed, north-facing shores at times today. The animation below times this out well.
Once we say goodbye to the precipitation today, that will basically do it for the remainder of the week and likely this weekend. We can thank that to a large area of high pressure building into the region. That high will bring temperatures at or above normal to Labrador w, while the Island will see near- to slightly below-normal temperatures, along with an abundance of sunshine.
NOR’EASTER TAKES SHAPE SOUTH OF NL LATER THIS WEEK
South of that high, a Nor’easter will take shape and looks like it will batter parts of the Northeastern United States and Maritime Provinces with rain, wind, and possible storm surge later this week or by the weekend. While this storm will garner plenty of attention due to its proximity to major cities like New York, Boston, and Philly, at this time this system does not pose a threat to our weather. The high-pressure center setting up shop will keep this low well to our south, and that is how it will stay unless there are some major changes to the pattern and subsequent forecasts. I’ll be watching just in case that happens.
