Tuesday Morning’s Weather Briefing — April 14, 2026
Good Tuesday morning!
Here are today’s weather highlights:
The overnight snow has ended, or is ending, and many of you across the Island will have this to deal with as the day starts.
Temperatures are near or above freezing on the Island, and just below in much of the Big Land… except the west, where it’s closer to -10º behind a cold front.
Highs today reach the mid single digits across most of Newfoundland, while much of Labrador will be closer to 0ºC, except in the West, where the high will be near -10ºC this afternoon.
Clouds decrease over the island today from west to east, while much of the Big Land will see partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies.
Wednesday and Thursday look quiet across NL. The next system arrives Thursday night and promises another messy round of rain and snow.
Digging Out and Moving On
The overnight snow has ended, or is in the process of wrapping up across the Island this morning. If you're reading this with a coffee in hand before heading out to clear the driveway, you're not alone — many communities across Newfoundland woke up to fresh accumulations that will need to be dealt with before the morning commute gets underway.
Temperature Split Across the Province
There's a notable temperature gradient across NL this morning. The Island is sitting near or just above the freezing mark in most areas, making for relatively mild conditions as the snow tapers off. Much of Labrador is hovering just below zero — not terrible, but enough to keep things frozen.
The exception is western Labrador, where a cold front has already pushed through. Temperatures there are running closer to -10ºC this morning, and that's a preview of what's coming for the rest of the Big Land later today and tomorrow.
A Tale of Two Forecasts
Today's high temperatures tell the story of a province split in two. Most of Newfoundland will see highs climb into the mid single digits — we're talking 3ºC to 6ºC for most areas. It's not beach weather, but it's enough to start melting some of that fresh snow and make travel conditions improve as the day progresses.
Labrador will be more variable. Much of central and eastern Labrador will see highs near the freezing mark, similar to what the Island is experiencing. But western Labrador? That's a different story. The high there will be near -10ºC this afternoon — yes, the high. That cold air is locked in behind the front and it's not going anywhere fast.
Improving Skies
Here's the good news: the weather improves from here, at least for today. Clouds will decrease over the Island this morning and afternoon, working from west to east as the system responsible for the overnight snow pulls away. By this evening, much of Newfoundland should be looking at partly cloudy to mostly clear skies.
The Big Land gets in on the clearing action too, with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies expected across much of Labrador today. It'll be nice to see some sun after the recent active pattern.
Brief Quiet Spell Ahead
Wednesday and Thursday are looking quiet across NL. No significant weather systems, no snow in the forecast, just a relatively calm stretch to catch our breath. These are the kind of days to get errands done, prep for the weekend, or just enjoy a break from shoveling.
But Don't Get Too Comfortable
Of course, this is Newfoundland and Labrador in April, so the quiet won't last long. The next system is already taking shape and will arrive Thursday night, bringing another messy round of rain and snow to contend with.
We'll have more details on that system as we get closer, but early indications suggest it could be another one of those classic spring mixed-precipitation events that makes travel tricky and keeps the plow operators busy.
For now, though, focus on today: dig out, enjoy the improving weather, and appreciate the brief calm before the next round.
