Tuesday brings flurries, some sun, and colder temps!

It’s just two days before Christmas, and the weather is becoming the big topic of conversation across Newfoundland and Labrador — for good reason.

For tonight and Tuesday, there are no major weather issues to deal with. It will stay cold, especially in Labrador where temperatures dip well into the minus 20s. A few flurries are expected Tuesday across western, central, and eastern Newfoundland, with locally a couple of centimetres possible — but nothing disruptive.

That changes as we move into Christmas Day.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for parts of eastern Newfoundland, including:

  • The Avalon Peninsula

  • Bonavista Peninsula

  • Clarenville–Terra Nova

  • Gander and Bonavista North

The concern is significant snowfall, potentially 15 cm or more, combined with wind gusts near 80 km/h.

What’s driving the uncertainty?

The storm system responsible is still fine-tuning its track. Earlier model guidance had the low tracking farther east, which would have kept warmer air offshore. More recent guidance has shifted the track slightly west, increasing the risk of snow changing to rain, especially on the Avalon Peninsula.

That rain/snow line will be critical — and it’s the biggest question mark in the forecast right now.

Timing and impacts

  • Early Christmas morning: Snow and blowing snow are likely across eastern Newfoundland, including the Avalon, Bonavista Peninsula, and northeast coast.

  • Christmas Day: Snow continues for many areas, possibly changing to rain on the Avalon depending on the storm’s final track.

  • Amounts: Some regions could see well over 30 cm, but it’s too early to lock down exact totals or pinpoint the hardest-hit areas.

Snow is also expected across:

  • Central Newfoundland

  • Northern Peninsula

  • Parts of Labrador

Looking beyond Christmas

There’s also the potential for another significant system later on Boxing Day into Friday and Saturday, bringing additional snow to eastern and central Newfoundland. This could make for a very snowy end to December in several regions.

Travel considerations

If you have travel plans on Christmas Day or shortly after, be prepared for delays:

  • Flights could be impacted, especially in eastern Newfoundland

  • Road conditions may deteriorate quickly during snowfall and blowing snow

I’ll have more clarity on snowfall amounts and impacts tomorrow, and I’ll likely go live to answer questions as confidence increases.
