Thursday Morning Weather Brief — October 30, 2025
Good Thursday morning! Here are today’s weather highlights:
Hurricane Melissa is currently moving through the Bahamas and accelerating. The storm is now moving northeast at 33 km/h. Maximum sustained winds are near 155 km/h (100 mph) with higher gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend 95 km from the centre. The Avalon Peninsula is solidly in the National Hurricane Center/Canadian Hurricane Centre’s cone of uncertainty this morning.
It continues to look like eastern Newfoundland will see rain from the storm as it passes Friday night, in conjunction with another system to the west. In fact, most of the Island will see rain from one system or the other, Friday night into Saturday. Labrador will see snow!
At this time, the highest winds (gusts of 120+ km/h) are forecast to remain offshore, but a more westerly track would shift some of them onshore.
Thursday will be calm across NL!
Halloween will start dry, and it looks like the rain will hold off over most of the Island until after 6 or 7 PM… so get the trick-or-treating done early. Areas along the south and west coasts may see it start earlier. It will also become increasingly breezier with winds from the east on Friday afternoon.
A Wreckhouse Wind Warning is in effect for Friday afternoon and evening for gusts as high as 120 km/h.
Parts of Labrador will see the first snowfall of the season Friday night through Saturday.

Temperatures are starting off on the cool side now for much of the Island, with readings between -1º and +6º. The coolest readings are in central areas, and the warmest are in the east and south. Meanwhile, Labrador is starting the day with readings averaging about 5º. Readings will recover nicely this afternoon, with most areas rebounding into the upper single digits to lower teens under a mix of sun and cloud.
The forecast for tonight and the start of Friday also remains quiet. However, wind speeds and clouds will increase on Friday morning. Rain will arrive in Labrador during the day on Friday, which will put a damper on the trick-or-treating. On the Island, it looks like the rain should hold off for most areas until late evening. Areas of the South Coast and West Coast will be the exception as the rain will start there late in the afternoon or earlier in the evening. Temperatures on Friday will be mild for most areas, even with the rain and wind.
