Thursday Morning Weather Brief | July 31, 2025
Good Thursday morning!
Many areas of the Island saw quite a light show last night as some nocturnal thunderstorms moved through. This was especially true on the Avlaon where even the St. John’s area was treated with a rare overnight thunderstorm. Check out this slwo motion video of some cloud to cloud strikes taken by Kathleen Dawe in CBS!
The storms produced some very heavy rainfall, locally, and moved out of the area late Wednesday night or very early Thursday morning. Behind them, we are left with a bit of a damp and muggy start this morning, with temperatures in the teens. Meanwhile in Labrador we are waking up to temperatures in the single digits in the west.

Thursday’s Forecast
Today will see a mix of sun and cloud over much of the Island, with a good chance of showers this afternoon over central and eastern areas once more. I don’t think we will see the same type of storm activity we saw last night. Speaking of showers, the West Coast and GNP are likely waking up to some this morning. Those, too, should become less numerous as the morning goes along. Temperatures reach the teens and 20s on the Island and mostly teens in Labrador today.
Today’s forecast maximum temperatures
Speaking of Labrador, rain will become widespread along the coast this morning. This will continue into early Friday as an area of low pressure takes shape just offshore. While the rainfall amounts will not be prolific, it appears that a solid 10 to 20 mm is on the way.
Friday’s note and the Weekend
At the moment, Friday is looking pretty quiet across the Province. Friday night into Saturday may see some rain over the Avalon Peninsula from an area of low pressure offshore. The best chance of rain looks to be over the southeast Avalon, but that could change based on the track of the low. I’ll have a more detailed update on this for you later today.
Area of low pressure will track southeast of the Avalon Friday night. Will it be close enough for heavy rain? Update later!
Have a great Thursday!
