The Provincial Fire Ban Has Been Lifted
The Provincial Government has officially lifted the province-wide outdoor fire ban that was issued on August 5. While this is welcome news for residents, officials remind everyone that it is still forest fire season in Newfoundland and Labrador, and caution is essential.
Check Before You Burn
Before lighting any outdoor fire, residents are urged to consult the Fire Hazard Map, which is updated daily at approximately 2:00 p.m. Open fires remain prohibited in areas where the index is rated very high or extreme.
The Public Reminders for Forest Fire Season also outlines what activities are permitted during this period, ensuring everyone enjoys the outdoors safely.
Fire Safety Reminders
To help prevent wildfires, the Provincial Government is asking residents to follow these important safety measures:
Attend fires at all times. Never leave a fire unattended, and ensure ashes are completely extinguished before leaving.
Be prepared. Always keep sufficient water and tools nearby to put out a fire quickly.
Handle coals properly. Barbecue or fire pit coals must be fully extinguished before disposal.
Off-road vehicle safety. Riders must use proper spark-arresting devices and carry a fire extinguisher with at least 225 grams of ABC-class dry chemical when travelling in grassy or wooded areas.
Appreciation and Vigilance
The Provincial Government thanks all residents for their cooperation in observing the open fire ban during this challenging wildfire season. Continued caution and preparedness will help protect our communities and natural landscapes.
