Temps in the Teens, Wind and Rain For Newfoundland Thursday and Friday, While Snow Flies In Labrador

Temperatures climbing into the teens will be felt by many across Newfoundland and Labrador as we close out the work week — but it comes with a price. Heavy rain, strong winds, snow, and even a risk of freezing rain are all on the table over the next couple of days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a yellow rainfall warning from the Connaigre to Channel–Port aux Basques, with upwards of 80 mm possible between Thursday and later Friday.

At this point, the only wind warning in effect is for the Wreckhouse, where southeasterly gusts up to 100 km/h are expected Thursday afternoon into the evening. Additional wind warnings for southern and eastern Newfoundland are likely for Friday as the next low-pressure system moves through.

The Big Picture

We’re entering a long-duration weather event driven by two systems moving through the region. Warm air will surge northward Thursday and Friday, bringing a multi-day thaw to Newfoundland, while Labrador remains locked in snow, except near the Straits.

Friday morning could feel unusually mild for mid-January, with temperatures reaching 10–12°C in places like St. John’s, Bay Roberts, Harbour Grace, and Old Perlican — potentially warmer than parts of Florida and the Gulf Coast at the same time.

That warmth won’t last long. Colder air begins pushing south late Friday into Saturday, keeping Newfoundland right on the rain–snow boundary heading into the weekend and early next week. That means messy forecasts continue rather than clean, all-snow events.

Timeline & Impacts

Thursday into early Friday

  • Rain spreads across much of Newfoundland

  • Fog possible along south-facing shores

  • Snow continues across Labrador at times throughout the day

  • Breezy conditions, especially in exposed areas

Friday

  • Widespread rain for Newfoundland, heavy at times

  • Wind gusts 80–100 km/h, with some eastern areas briefly exceeding 100 km/h

  • Snow persists across Labrador

  • Freezing rain risk for the Northern Peninsula and southeastern Labrador by afternoon

Friday Night into Saturday

  • Colder air wins out

  • Rain changes to snow for the Northern Peninsula and parts of western Newfoundland

  • Snow tapers off in Labrador

  • Rain ends as flurries over central, southern and eastern Newfoundland

Rain, Snow & Ice Amounts

By 8:00 a.m. Friday, rainfall totals are expected to reach:

  • 25–50+ mm across southern Newfoundland

  • 10–25 mm farther north

  • 10–20 mm for southern Labrador and parts of the Northern Peninsula

Snowfall through Friday:

  • 15–30 cm across much of central and eastern Labrador

  • Less than 5 cm for most of Newfoundland, mainly later Friday

Freezing rain totals of 6–10 mm are possible for parts of the Northern Peninsula and southeastern Labrador. While not extreme, ice accumulation at these levels can still stress trees and power lines.

Looking Ahead

Temperatures will swing sharply over the next several days:

  • Friday: Very mild in eastern Newfoundland

  • Saturday: Near or below freezing

  • Early next week: Continued temperature swings as systems track along the warm–cold boundary

There are signs that more persistent cold may finally settle in later next week, particularly for Labrador.
