Snow flew and rainbows shined on Thursday… What’s next?

What would you say if I told you a rainbow appeared over Conception Bay South this morning… while parts of the northeast Avalon were dealing with freezing rain?

That’s exactly what happened.

And when you mix sunshine with lingering precipitation? You get a rainbow. 🌈

By early this afternoon, sunny breaks were still visible from parts of Conception Bay South, while eastern areas remained much greyer.

🌨️ What’s Happening Now Across Newfoundland & Labrador?

Western Newfoundland & Labrador: Snow Ongoing

Snow this afternoon/evening is largely confined to:

  • Western Newfoundland

  • The Northern Peninsula

  • Coastal Labrador

  • Labrador West

Radar coverage doesn’t extend far enough north to fully capture Labrador snowfall, but simulated radar imagery shows steady snow across much of the Big Land.

As the low pressure system tracks northward:

  • Coastal Labrador and Lab West will continue to see snowfall.

  • Western Newfoundland will see snow persist through Friday.

  • Higher terrain will see the most accumulation.

This will not be a classic onshore coastal snow event. Instead, it’s shaping up to be an orographically enhanced setup — meaning:

  • Coastal areas may not see much.

  • Mountainous and higher elevation terrain will see heavier totals.

If you're in the hills of western Newfoundland or eastern Labrador, expect locally intense snowfall.

❄️ Expected Snowfall (Through Early Saturday)

Labrador

  • Churchill Falls: ~20 cm

  • Labrador West: ~10 cm

  • Coastal Labrador: 5–15 cm (higher inland and at elevation)

Western Newfoundland

  • Higher elevations near Corner Brook & Steady Brook: locally significant totals. Lower elevations expect 5 to 15 cm.

  • Rocky Harbour: ~30 cm (locally higher in mountains)

  • Lewis Hills: 20–30 cm

  • Higher peaks: locally up to 60 cm

Lower elevations and eastern Newfoundland? Much lighter amounts — often dependent on whether you get under a brief flurry or snow squall.

These snow bands will be localized. Some communities may barely see a dusting, while others briefly under a heavier band could see several centimetres quickly.

💨 Some Wind Over Next 36+ Hours

As the low pulls north:

  • Much of Newfoundland’s coastlines (east, central, west, and south) will see gusts nearing 70 km/h tonight and Friday.

  • Coastal Labrador will see similar speeds

  • Interior locations will be breezy, but speeds will be below 60 km/h.

Winds should ease somewhat Saturday as the pressure gradient relaxes, but this is Newfoundland & Labrador — completely calm conditions are rare.

🌡️ Temperatures

Labrador West:

  • Tonight: near -22°C

  • Gradual cooling next week

Labrador Coast:

  • Near 0°C

Island of Newfoundland:

  • Overnight lows: near 0 to -2°C

  • Friday highs: 1–3°C

  • Weekend: near or slightly above freezing for many areas

Northern Peninsula remains the coldest on the island with highs -4 to -7°C.

📅 Weekend Outlook

  • Western areas: Continued flurries

  • Central & Eastern: Chance of scattered flurries

  • Beyond that: Relatively tame pattern

  • Slight cooling trend into Sunday

Nothing overly disruptive for most of NL after early Saturday…
