Slow Improvement Tonight and Saturday Before a Sunny Sunday

Friday was a wet and unsettled day across much of Newfoundland, with rain, heavy downpours and a few thunderstorms developing around an area of low pressure in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
There were some brighter moments by late afternoon, including sunny breaks over parts of the Burin and Avalon peninsulas. However, heavy rain continued across western Newfoundland from Stephenville through Corner Brook and Deer Lake. Other pockets of heavier rain were found near Bonavista, King’s Cove and just east of the Eastport Peninsula.
All of that precipitation continues to rotate from south to north around the low, which will take its sweet time leaving the province.
The low will slowly cross Newfoundland overnight and remain nearby early Saturday morning. Scattered showers will continue across parts of the Avalon and northeastern Newfoundland, although most should be relatively light by that point. Some fog will also develop overnight, with temperatures remaining in the middle teens across much of the Island.
There is still more rain to come before the system moves away. Another 20 mm or more is possible along parts of the southwest coast south of the Port au Port Peninsula. The Corner Brook area may receive another 10 to 20 mm, while pockets of heavier rain will also remain possible between Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander and toward the northeast coast.
The improvement Saturday will be gradual and most noticeable across western, central and southern Newfoundland, where there will be more sunshine. Eastern areas will hold onto the clouds and scattered showers longer, but conditions should improve as the day progresses. Highs will reach the upper teens and lower 20s.
Saturday also looks quite good across most of Labrador. Aside from a few showers in the north, skies will be mostly sunny with afternoon temperatures in the upper teens to around 20°C.
Sunday is easily the pick of the weekend. Sunny skies are expected across much of the province, with highs once again in the upper teens and lower 20s. It also happens to be my birthday, so I’ll happily accept the sunshine!
The forecast for next week is also looking a little better than it did previously. A few scattered showers will be possible around the middle of the week, but the stronger areas of low pressure may remain stalled to our south. That is something I’ll continue to watch over the coming days.
