Slight Changes Ahead As We Near The Middle/End Of The Week
Satellite imagery shows cloud cover continuing to work toward coastal Labrador and Newfoundland, bringing with it drizzle, light snow, and pockets of freezing drizzle. Temperatures today hovered close to the freezing mark, which has made for slippery conditions in spots.
However, not everyone stayed under grey skies. Parts of southern and southwestern Newfoundland managed to break out into some sunshine this afternoon. Webcam images showed sunny stretches along the Burgeo Highway, sun and cloud in Port aux Basques, and even some bright breaks around Corner Brook.

Tonight: Watch for Black Ice
As temperatures dip overnight, wet pavement across eastern and northeastern areas may refreeze, leading to black ice. Lows will range from around 0°C in the east to -3 to -6°C across western Newfoundland. Labrador remains a story of extremes, with milder readings in the south and much colder air holding on in the west.
Why Won’t This Pattern Budge?
The jet stream is currently positioned well south of the province, leaving us in what meteorologists often call “no man’s land.” Cut-off lows — famously described as “a weather person’s woes” — are keeping conditions stubborn and hard to pin down.
That will begin to change mid-week.
Snow Returns Thursday
As the jet stream dips later Wednesday into Thursday, a more organized system will approach from the southwest. Snow will arrive in eastern Newfoundland early Thursday, though it looks like a brief burst for many — generally a couple of centimetres in lower elevations, with higher terrain seeing more.
The bigger story will unfold later Thursday into Friday for western Newfoundland, the Northern Peninsula, and parts of Labrador, where snowfall could become significant. Some areas of the Northern Peninsula may see 20+ cm, with snow lingering into Friday as the system slows down.
Looking Ahead
Temperatures will stay near seasonal norms, hovering close to zero across much of the island and coastal Labrador. While it won’t turn especially cold, it will stay unsettled at times, with periods of snow, wind, and lingering cloud.
