Rain, showers, drizzle and sunshine highlight this weekend’s forecast!

Clouds rolled in early across eastern Newfoundland today, but not everyone stayed under them. Parts of the Avalon — including CBS — managed to break out into some sunshine this afternoon. That didn’t last, though. As we moved into the evening, the fog came back in, low cloud redeveloped, and even a bit of drizzle started to show up again.

Satellite imagery this evening shows plenty of moisture sitting just east of the Island, and it’s slowly working its way west. Through tonight, that means fog, drizzle, and low cloud spreading across much of eastern and northeastern Newfoundland, including the Avalon, Bonavista Peninsulas, and even up toward the Northern Peninsula and parts of southern Labrador. In many of these areas, that murky setup is going to hang around for a good chunk of Saturday.

Meanwhile, a separate system is at play farther south and west. Rain moving through the Maritimes and into Quebec is beginning to edge into western Labrador. That brings rain and showers there overnight, along with a few flurries mixed in — though temperatures are marginal, so anything frozen is going to be wet and sloppy.

Saturday ends up being a bit of a split forecast.

Eastern and northeastern Newfoundland will deal with persistent fog and low cloud, with only limited breaks. Temperatures across the Island will generally sit in the 5 to 10 degree range, maybe a touch warmer in a few inland spots that can sneak in some sunshine. Western Labrador stays unsettled with rain showers and even a few flurries.

The rain over southwestern Newfoundland and Labrador doesn’t move much during the day Saturday either — it kind of stalls out — and only slowly weakens into Saturday night.

By Sunday, things improve.

It’s not a perfect day, but it’s a better one. Most areas see calmer conditions, and temperatures trend a bit milder. There will still be cloud around, but overall, it’s a step in the right direction compared to Saturday.

That improvement doesn’t last long.

Another system rolls in Sunday night into Monday, bringing a more impactful stretch of weather. Rain spreads across much of Newfoundland and Labrador, but the bigger story could be the wind. Right now, it looks like many areas — especially along exposed coastal sections — could see gusts in the 80 to 100 km/h range from Sunday night into midday Monday. That’s something I’ll be watching closely over the next couple of days.

The trade-off with that system is milder air. Once it moves through, temperatures climb into the middle teens for parts of central and western Newfoundland by Tuesday, and we should see some sunshine return as well.

Beyond that, the pattern stays a bit unsettled. Labrador and parts of the Island will continue to see periodic chances of rain through next week, with another round possible by Friday, especially across central and western regions.

So in short — foggy and damp to start the weekend, a nicer Sunday, then a windy and wet start to next week before things improve again.
