Many of you caught an incredible display of Northern Lights last night — but will they be as bright tonight?
Short answer: no. Conditions are much less favourable for a repeat performance, and clouds and incoming weather systems won’t help. Here’s what’s on the way.
Tonight’s Weather Setup
Across the island tonight, temperatures fall between –1°C and +3°C, with rain for most areas and pockets of wet snow at higher elevations in central and western parts of Newfoundland.
In Labrador, rain arrives in the south before spreading north and west overnight. Labrador West drops to –12°C, with clear skies there for a time.
A low is currently spinning just south of Placentia Bay, pushing heavy rain north across the Avalon. Rainfall rates will intensify early this evening, making the drive home in St. John’s a soggy one. By midnight, the heaviest rain moves off the Avalon but continues across central, the northeast coast, and into the interior.
Friday: Two Systems, Lots of Precipitation
Tomorrow brings a complicated setup with two systems:
System #1
Rain and wet snow across western Newfoundland in the morning
Showers in central
Snow pushing back into Labrador by mid-morning (rain right along the coast)
System #2
Moves in around midday Friday, bringing another round of heavy rain to the Avalon and eastern Newfoundland
Pushing west Friday evening and Friday night
Finally clears out early Saturday
Expected Rainfall
Over the next 48 hours:
Avalon & Bonavista Peninsulas: 30–60+ mm
Central Newfoundland: ~30 mm
West Coast: 30–40 mm
Labrador Coast: Rain/wet snow mix with meaningful total precipitation
We could also see 5–15 cm of wet snow in the highest elevations of central and especially interior areas south of Grand Falls–Windsor. Most lower elevations will see only slushy accumulations.
Labrador’s higher terrain may see 10–30 cm of snow through Saturday.
Winds
Gusts 60–80 km/h overnight and Friday morning (Northern Peninsula, Straits)
Lighter Friday afternoon
Strong again Friday evening for the Avalon & northeast — 80–90 km/h possible
Winds ease Saturday afternoon
The Weekend
Saturday and Sunday look much better for eastern Newfoundland — finally a break after a stormy week. Great chance to clean up the yard or tackle those outdoor jobs.
Labrador sees some snow Saturday with improvement Sunday.
The pattern stays active through next week, so keep checking for updates.
