Province-wide Fire Ban in Effect until September 7, 2025
A province-wide fire ban is now in place for Newfoundland and Labrador and will remain in effect until at least September 7, at which point the situation will be reassessed.
The ban prohibits open fires within 300 metres (or 1,000 feet) of forested areas. This includes any land with trees—such as forests, parks, yards, trails, and greenbelts. For context, 300 metres is roughly the length of five hockey rinks.
All permits to burn grass, brush, or other materials have been cancelled.
Wildfire risk is currently rated high to extreme across many parts of the province. While risk levels can vary by region from day to day, implementing a province-wide ban helps reduce the overall threat and allows wildfire response crews to focus on active fire situations. Violating the ban carries a minimum fine of $1,000.
Barbecues and burning units (gas, kerosene, alcohol, propane, charcoal) are still permitted, but only if they are kept at least 3.5 metres away from any flammable material such as trees or brush. Coals must be fully extinguished before being safely discarded.
Off-road vehicle operators are required to:
Have a spark arrestor or baffling device installed
Carry a fire extinguisher with at least 225 grams of ABC-class dry chemical when operating in grassy or wooded areas
