Parts of the Towns of Paradise and Conception Bay South under Evacuation Alerts

A new fire broke out west of Paddy’s Pond late this morning or early afternoon and spread quickly toward the water. While satellite data shows most of the growth has been toward the western side of the pond—which may be acting as a natural barrier—Premier John Hogan said this evening there has also been growth on the north side, near the head of the pond. He noted that most aerial suppression efforts are now focused on that northern flank. The fire is reported to be roughly 200 hectares in size.

NASA FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Managment System US/CANADA) data shows the fire’s footprint

Due to the fire’s close proximity to the Towns of Paradise and Conception Bay South, evacuation alerts have gone out for the following areas in each community. Remember, an alert means an evacuation is possible. An order means you must evacuate. The order hasn’t been given at the time of this writing. Here are the details:

  • TOWN OF CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH

    • The Evacuation Alert zone starts at the Paradise/Outer Ring Road turn off onto Route 60 to Manual River Bridge, up Peacekeepers Way to Cloverleaf, and the Trans-Canada Highway and back to the Paradise Trans-Canada Highway turn-off. For the clarity of CBS residents, this means that all properties east of the Manuals River should be ready to evacuate if so directed.

  • TOWN OF PARADISE

    • The Evacuation Alert zone is the area on the south side of Topsail Road from the Outer Ring Road Exit to the CBS Boundary. Residents in these areas should be ready to evacuate IF so directed.

REMEMBER this is like a heads up. This DOES NOT mean you need to evacuate. That will come when an EVACUATION ORDER is issued. That may happen AT ANY TIME, even in the middle of the night. Make sure at least one phone in your home is not on silent mode this evening as the alert could come in the form of an emergency alert.
