Heavy rain continues to fall across the Avalon Peninsula and eastern Newfoundland this evening, especially around the St. John’s metro. The core of the heaviest rain is slowly pushing west as of 6:15 PM, and for the metro it’s almost finished — but areas north on the Avalon and into eastern parts of the island will see it a little while longer.

Off the easternmost peninsulas, another round of heavier rain and even some high winds will move in shortly. At the same time, wet snow is beginning to show up over parts of western Newfoundland, mainly in the higher elevations. If any snow sticks tonight, I don’t expect much accumulation.

One neat feature on the satellite/radar combo this evening: you can clearly see in the video the low-pressure centre swirling near the mouth of Placentia Bay. Around this low, winds will pick up from the east and south, but this won’t be anything like the storm we dealt with last week.

Wind Timeline

  • Avalon & Bonavista Peninsulas: Wind gusts will peak between now and about midnight — some areas reaching 80–100 km/h.

  • Metro (St. John’s): Winds slowly ease after midnight.

  • Burin Peninsula (north side): A few hours of stronger gusts are possible despite not being in the official warning.

  • Eastern & Southeastern NL: A core of strong winds will sweep west between 9:30 PM and midnight, bringing some brief higher gusts to areas like St. Bride’s, Swift Current, Arnold’s Cove, and Clarenville before weakening.

Rain & Snow Forecast

  • Avalon / East NL: Another 10–15 mm tonight, possibly 20–25 mm for the Burin Peninsula.

  • Western NL: Rain transitioning to wet snow in the higher terrain overnight — a few centimetres possible, especially in the highlands south/east of Deer Lake and into the Long Range Mountains.

  • Labrador:

    • Coast: Rain tonight and Saturday morning.

    • Labrador West: A few centimetres of snow tomorrow.

Weekend Outlook

Saturday morning starts damp in some areas, but conditions improve through the day and into Sunday. For many, the weekend looks surprisingly good — even an opportunity to clean up the yard if you’re still staring at a lawn that somehow looks greener than it did in August. Like mine!

Labrador sees some snow in the west on Saturday, then milder temperatures (especially along the coast) and improving weather on Sunday.

Looking Ahead: Another System Sunday Night–Monday

I’m keeping a close eye on the next weather maker. A new low arrives Sunday night into Monday and may start as snow in western Newfoundland before changing to rain. For the island overall, this looks like another round of significant rainfall.

Labrador could be dealing with significant snowfall Monday, depending on the exact track.

I’ll have updates throughout the weekend in the Sheerr Weather app, and of course on YouTube and social media.

I’ll have my next update posted over the weekend.
