Multiple fires cause evacuations on the Avalon today as warm and dry weather fuels the flames

Warm, dry and breezy weather fueld two new fires burning on the Avalon Peninsula today. One fire is burning near the community of Kingston (Conception Bay North), on the Bay de Verde Peninsula and the other fire is burning between Holyrood and Butterpot Provincial Park. The fire burning near CBN is the larger of two. According to the Provincial Wildfire Dashboard, it’s about 258 hectares in size. The fire burning near Holyrood is currently 20 hectares in size. Both fires are listed as ‘Out-of-Control’ with a full response of ground crews, water bombers, and helicopters.

The Forecast

The weather over the next several days across the Province will be dominated by an unusually strong ridge of high pressure. This means we will see more sunshine, warm temperatures, dry air, and very little rainfall. While this may be welcome news for summer lovers, this pattern will serve to exacerbate the fire risk across the region. The fire danger is already listed as ‘extreme’ for many regions and I only expect that to become more widespread over the coming days.

A big driver in that will be the ridge of high pressure building in. This will peak later in the week and over the weekend, driving temperatures up to as many as 10 or 12 degrees above normal. This means we are looking at highs near 30º for many areas of the Island, outside of the South Coast and Northern Peninsula. Labrador will also see readings this warm. Again, this will only increase the fire danger across the region.

Often, when we see readings this warm, there is some humidity in the air. This will be a rare time when the humidity will be low and the temperatures will be warm. The combination of these two things, and breezy conditions, means the risk of fires will be substantial until we get some much-needed rainfall.
