High Pressure Takes Hold And An Unusually Long Period Quiet Weather Sets In

A chilly start to the first full day of autumn gave way to a pretty decent afternoon across Newfoundland and Labrador, and the quiet weather is only getting started. Temperatures dropped below freezing in parts of Labrador Wednesday morning, including -3°C in Wabush, while Churchill Falls was near 0°C. Badger fell to just over 2°C following Tuesday night’s frost advisory. By the afternoon, though, sunshine helped temperatures recover into the middle and upper teens across much of the province.
High pressure settling over the region will be the main driver of our weather over the next several days, and that means a remarkably quiet stretch for late September.
Tonight, lows will generally fall between 4°C and 11°C across the province. Thursday looks excellent, with plenty of sunshine and highs in the upper teens to lower 20s across much of Newfoundland and Labrador.
That general pattern continues through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Newfoundland will see plenty of sunshine with very little rain showing up in the forecast. Labrador will also stay mild, particularly in the south, Labrador West and around Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where highs could reach the upper teens and even lower 20s at times. The north coast will be somewhat cooler, and it may turn a little breezy there Saturday, but overall there are no significant weather systems expected across the province through the weekend.
What about the nor’easter?
A potent nor’easter developing well south of Atlantic Canada will likely get plenty of attention over the next few days, particularly in the northeastern United States. The storm could bring heavy rain, strong winds and very large waves to portions of the U.S. East Coast, but the setup is much different for us.
High pressure building over eastern Canada will effectively block the storm from moving toward Atlantic Canada through the weekend. As long as that pattern holds — and right now there is good agreement that it will — the nor’easter should remain well to our south. There are some indications that the weakening low could drift closer to the Maritimes early next week, but by then it will have been around for several days and should be considerably weaker.
At this point, I don’t expect it to play a major role in Newfoundland and Labrador’s weather, although it’s something I’ll continue to watch. For now, the forecast is refreshingly straightforward: sunshine, mild afternoons and very little rain through the rest of the week.
